5150 OD vs Palladium

Hello all! I'm trying to decide between a 5150 OD or the Palladium. All the demos of the palladium are hit or miss. Sometimes it sounds killer, other times it has a weird mid range thing that I don't like. There hasn't been a demo of the 5150 I don't like, but I haven't heard it do as many things as the palladium. For reference, I'll either be running these through a Marshall DSL40 or a Powerstage 170 into a cab. Opinions?

Re: 5150 OD vs Palladium

the palladium is great but i havent tried the 5150 to be able to compare them

Re: 5150 OD vs Palladium

I was able to essentially clone a 5150 amp with a Palladium, but I haven't tried the 5150 pedal. The Palladium has a lot of EQ range, and I think it is the real secret to this pedal.

Can it also cover Marshall-y territory? If it can do that and a 5150 sound I'm sold. Have you tried it with a Powerstage?

If you haven't check out the ProGuitarShop demo of the palladium I think it is a great representation of the range of tones and general character of the palladium. Andy at PGS does great demos that pretty faithfully represent the tones at hand, youtube compression notwithstanding. You hear a more british sounding mid-gain tone starting at about 2:45 The Palladium is definitely a killer pairing with the PS170 for high gain tones.

Actually, I didn't try to go Marshall with it, but when I spent some time with it, it was paired with a PowerStage 170.

Re: 5150 OD vs Palladium

I haven't tried either, but if it were to choose one, it would be that Palladium. That mid sweep control is it's secret weapon. I did that mod to the OD channels on my JVM 410H, and it made them much more versatile. Whoever decided to add that to the Palladium was wise.

Re: 5150 OD vs Palladium

I hear the weird mid thing you're talking about in the beginning of the demo. The lower gain sounds aren't bad.

Re: 5150 OD vs Palladium

I'd never thought I hear a Napalm Death song to be the first sound on a professional website's gear review!!

Re: 5150 OD vs Palladium

i havent noticed any weird eq things with mine, there is a ton of shaping that can be done

Re: 5150 OD vs Palladium

To my ears the 5150 OD is a little spongier, and feels good, but has this crispy treble thing I couldn't dial out.

The Palladium is a little more dry, with more air and depth, and can get a wider variety of tones.

They both sound good, but I would go with the Palladium personally, especially if you're gonna use the Power Stage - it really shines in that application.

Obviously I'm a little biased though.

I tried to get the 5150 to work for me through a clean Fenderish style amp and no dice for me. Same issue with the high end ^. Still itching to try the Palladium. I couldn't get the mids dialed well with the 5150 either. YMMV.

Undone, one of my favorite aspects of the Palladium is how much control you have over the high end: between the presence knob, treble knob, and the upper reaches of the sweepable mids you have a lot of opportunity to fine-tune and sculpt the sound. Also because the eq is active and not a passive roll-off you can get about as extreme as you want if you are fighting an especially dark sounding cab or stage

Have you run it into a tube amp? I think it'd be cool to have a DSL and then do a AB setup where I could select which preamp is active. I could put my wah and pickup booster before the splitter too...

Re: 5150 OD vs Palladium

Palladium sounds great run into the front end of a tube amp - when we were voicing it we tested it with a variety of amps, including the clean channel on a Dual Rec, JCM 2000, and 5150 II (and compared it to the dirty channel on these amps as well). At home I use Palladium with a little Fender Princeton, which sounds surprisingly good.
