What is the major differences here?
Soundwise and featurewise?
Which is better for what syle music?

I also I saw a 40watt XXX on the market now, that might be the one for me. Anyone heard these either?

I couldn't find specs on the 40w XXX, even on the Peavey site.
Am I to assumes that it has as many tubes as the 120w version?

I own a XXX stack,i was going to get the 5150 and the ONLY reason i did not is because of the XXX's 3 channels;)
tone wise i would say the XXX is more along the lines of a boogie and the 5150 is more like a soldano SLO/marshall hybrid.
both sound great but i personally needed the third channel one for clean only, one for rhythms only and one for leads each set with a different EQ(tone)
I hate soloing on the same EQ as my rhythm EQ:barf:

Can't find specs on the 40wt but since the Clean and Crunch channel are shared I would think there is some difference. Obviously a smaler tranny and fewer power tubes. Find out on the power tubes because one of the cooler features of the amp is the ability to easily swap el34 and 6l6 tubes in it. I prefer the xxx over the 5150, I thought the 5150 was thinner sounding and it was definitely noisier. The 60wt. combo looks to have the same layout as the 120wt versions but I am not sure. Check the Peavey forum you can usually get answers there pretty quickly.

The XXX has active tone on the Crunch and Ultra not the Clean, that's one reason there has to be some difference between the 40wt. combo and the larger units. Seeing that they've combined two of the channels. I didn't mean to make it sound like the 5150 was bad, I liked it enough to look into getting one I just prefered the XXX. I was using a head and bottom to rehearse with maybe it wasn't a good match I am pretty sure it was a H&K bottom but wouldn't swear to it.

Thanks guys.
The 40w is a two channel and a crunch/boost button. Probably not as good as having three channels.
I'm leaning toward the 60w 1x12 XXX.
Probably gonna have to be used thought to get in my range right now.

HEY WATTAGE:

is the 60w 1x12 XXX one of those that you can swap power tubes? That's a cool option so you more options on a "custom" setup tubewise, or if you had two of these, you could have different tubes and a whole other sound.

I would make sure it has an external cab jack so that you can add a cab at a later date. My 1x12 flex sounds so much better hooked up to a cab that I rarely play it by itself anymore, its just to thin sounding with a single 12. Just something to thik about...

Yup and guess what follow this link to the manuals page and you can download the manuals for the different models.

To me, the 5150 has a more harmonically rich distortion. I guess it's really metal shredder-friendly. I didn't like the XXX as much. It still has a sweet tone though. Really midrangey and gutsy like a Mesa Recto.

I also thought the 5150's EQ was a bit thin sounding, so I got an MXR 10-band EQ for mine and not it's got balls. It sounds so much more powerful and kickass now.

Re: 5150 or XXX

we have a XXX combo, 40 watt NOT the efx one, heard the effects suck for the most part. Switched out the 6l6's for el34's and it sounds much warmer! my 16 yr old son uses it in his band, loves the distortion, where my husband has a Peavey classic 30 and doesn't like the XXX sound as much, it's apples to oranges there, but my husband did like it more with the el34's. Uses 4 preamp tubes, 1 works along side of the power tubes. It is loud as hell for a 40 watter! here's the list at Musicians friend, they had the EFX one for dirt cheap 4-6 months ago, like $450 or something, sold out of them of course! got ours used on Ebay for $500. You are the coolest chick EVER!!!

Re: 5150 or XXX

5150 = soldano, XXX = Boogie recto; sounds right to my ears. I sooo use my 5150 setting (granted, it's a model, the real thing would be even better most likely) for everything - If a thrid channel is the issue, just get a cool flexible stomp to add to the clean. Insto three channels

debsmisto - where did they grow you? I get riled up when GUYS talk like that in a post. A CHICK - forgeddaboutit!!!!!!!!

Re: 5150 or XXX

Ha! thanks guy's! I have had to learn all of this stuff to not get ripped off on Ebay and at places like Guitar Center! I use Harmony Central alot too! Deb
