5150 test + New Song

I've had this one written in it's current form for a month or two now, not sure where to take it from where it ends, though.

That said, I went ahead and reamped all the tracks I had before through my 5150, as a tone test - I'm liking it so far, but this is by no means final.

Signal chain was JB -> OD808 -> 5150 -> Mesa 2x12 vert -> SM57 -> Firepod.


I wasn't sure how things would sound from a playing standpoint, as I tracked it with a POD, and this was before I got the Strobostomp and an axe with 81's, so I'll probably retrack at least some of it, if just to compare.

There's no bass - I'll add a ghetto one later.

*EDIT* New version - reamped through the same chain, SM57 replaced with an Audix i5.

Woah... Opeth on crack? I wrote this song with a huge Opeth influence in mind, so suffice it to say, that's great to hear!


It still sounds really muffled and "blanket-over-speaker-ish" to me, when A/Bing it with other tracks. So far, I haven't been able to dial that out. I think my SM57 might be shot - I need to pick up an i5 or something and compare it.

the tone almost reminds me of Soilwork's but with more bass and less highs...it sounds pretty good.

Did another recording of a song that's in progress (way shorter this time).

I'm digging this tone a bit better, although it still sounds a bit boxey to my ears, and the high end could be tamed a bit.

This was with the 81 and strobostomp instead of the JB and the small korg tuner.

I personally like a little bit of the boxy kind of sound. But then again, the EMG track didn't sound bad either, just a different flavor. The EMGs sounded a bit tighter and cleaner while the first track sounded more growly IMO.

I was very interested to hear a heavy JB clip, as I'm thinking about buying one. Then I heard the 81 clip, & I was immediately reminded which pup is my favortie for teh metal. I'll probably still get a JB, though.

A lot of the JB sounding bigger was the settings I used - it was much bass heavier and the mic was farther from the cone.


That said, I through in a new set of tubes and biased the sucker up last night, and it's sounding much better! I'll post clips later today.

Dropped a it from 400-600, boosted a bit from 4k-6k, and dropped the high mids on the 80% panned tracks a little bit. Also replaced some preamp tubes and rebiased the poweramp. This was with the 81, and I added some ghetto bass.

I still like the first one (JB) best, mostly because I liked the musical content better.

The tone on this sounds very similar to Nevermore-This Godless Endeavor.
