5150 Three

Re: 5150 Three

Sure is a sexy beast!

The clips I've heard of it don't sound as good as my 6505+ though.

I don't know how you couldn't like a 5150, crank em up to 5 turn the gain down to 4 and you'll have a great crunch. They're only buzzy till you have the volume up.

Well, I'm a former owner of a 5150, possess above-average technical skills, use my fingers and wrist to achieve a "bright/aggressive" tone, and prefer the tone of vintage amps.

Does that answer your question?

They are bright and agressive...

Any way, why would you even be looking at this is you prefer the tone of vintage amps?

Re: 5150 Three

I always investigate anything with Eddie's name on it, whether or not it supports my "tone goals".

Re: 5150 Three

I'vew never really understood Peavey's circuits. Like the whole Pre-gain/Post-gain thing. I know a guy who had a Peavey amp and I tried to dial in a good tone, and couldn't. If I turned up the whole volume there was little distortion and with it turned down I could get a lot but either way it sucked. Though I have never tried anything that was Peavey that I liked. I always go on to my friends about my hate for Gibson and how I'd play any guitar before a Les Paul, but maybe, just maybe I'd take an LP over a Peavey. And on that note, I would take pretty much any amp over a Peavey.

Re: 5150 Three

...some Peavey dissension? I think Peavey is one of the finest amp makers out there. I have all kinds of "good" amps, and I still love my Triple X. Solid, reilable, inexpensive, sound decent - what's not to like? Not a prestigious enough name for someone to brag to their friends?

I am curious to try this Fender out in person and see what it does. EVH's past ventures with Peavey had great results. I hope that his work with Fender produces more than a $30,000 replica guitar.

Re: 5150 Three

this ones made by fender, not peavey

Yes, and too bad Bruce Zinky didn't have a little hands on development of the circuit. It would be even more MONSTROUS than it probably already is. Fender has pretty much always had good amps, but he sure honed in some of their more contemporary designs. Regardless, I'm sure Fender did extremely well on piecing together this venture. The specs say, "Custom made transformers and special biasing help achieve Edward's fabled Variable AC effect." I wonder if that is similar to the Metroamp virtual variac on one of their models?

I def don't need a new amp, and especially not another main amp. But I'm still pretty interested to see how this one pans out. If it's point-to-point, or pcb, or a little of both? Fender does make some tough amps, no doubt. I had an early 5150 when they came out, I didn't keep it too long, but it was made well. Anyways I wasn't out to use or come near copping a VH type tone. I was tired of Marshall's in general, it was everyone's staple. Mostly I was just impressed with Ed's input, cause the man knows good tone, it's inherent to himself as a whole. Now, take that EVH insignia off, and that will look like an even better amp. Too bad they just recently came out with the Blonde Super Sonic, cause that would be a prime tolex for this contraption. With 3 individual channels and independent eq's for each, I'm sure this will have some luscious vintage flavour in it somewhere. Oh yeah, don't forget the infamous Fender 'Clean' sound that is bound to be found within it too.

Wickedly Tough, 'microwave' may be right, I bet it "cooks"...

ps. Who needs reverb when you're sizzling heat on large irons cranked?

Re: 5150 Three

Oh, I assumed it was a Peavey as Peavey has a line of amps called 5150. Still, I'm not an EVH fan at all, so I doubt I'd like it. Cheerio.

evh owns '5150' and when he left peavey he took the name '5150' with him. the peaveys are now called '6505'.

as your sig says you play punk, ska, ect. so i wouldnt expect you to like a death metal amp

Re: 5150 Three

I think it have to be a great amp!EVH has a great taste ,and Fender wouldn't bite a rotten apple!
I would like to see the footswitch!

Re: 5150 Three

I was never a fan of the 5150, so hopefully this will be an improvement.

I'd like EVH/fender to do a one channel version...

Pregain=Pre Amp Gain.
Postgain=Master volume.

What's there to not understand?

And how do you define a good tone? I would have a damn hard time finding an amp to get a better sounding lead tone for the money. IMO For what "one tone" it does, it can compete with quite a few amps that cost about double in an attempt to get the same sound. I'm plenty happy with the clean and lower gain options it has too...

Re: 5150 Three

Can't wait to test drive one. I don't plan on buying one, but I'm curious to hear the next VH amp.

Re: 5150 Three

I'll be trying this amp for sure. Won't be getting one, but it sure will be tempting. I used to own a 5150 as well and I liked it a lot. Sometimes I wish I still had it.......until I remember how heavy it is...LOL.

Re: 5150 Three

as a major fan of the original 5150 amp i plan to at least try one of these new EVH amps.... i do not think i'll be able to afford such a beast but you never know...

Re: 5150 Three

As a very satisfied Peavey user for 27 years, and a proud new owner of a 6505+, I can vouch for the 5150/6505 as being an absolutely brutal amp. As far as fender is concerned, they can hang their hat on the twin and bassman, and rightfully so, but fender never made a high gain/metal amp worth a s@#$! And that's a fact. This new amp will more than likely be a 5150/6505 knock-off. What, is Eddie going to radically change his sound? I dont think so. And although I like Van Halen, I certainly didn't buy the amp to sound like Eddie. So I scratch my head when I read comments like "I dont like Van Halen so I wont like that amp". The 6505 has more gain and balls than Eddie would ever use. Take that to the bank Peavey bashers!!
