5150 vs. XXX

I was wondering what you all thought about the 5150 and XXX guitar heads. I have a 5150 and was debating wether to trade it for the XXX. I can only get once good decent sound out of the 5150. I love the distortion on it but it is not very versatile....and i knew the XXX seemed to be a little more versatile. As we all know the clean is terrible on the 5150. Should i trade my 5150 for the XXX? Or would i be making a mistake?

Re: 5150 vs. XXX

I'd bring your guitar to a guitar center or sam ash and try it out..I had a 5150 half stack for a long time..was never satisfied with it..but when tryin' out gutars I played through a XXX for a few hours..and that amp rips!

Re: 5150 vs. XXX

You should wait a few more months and try the JSX. Sounds like it's gonna be a real winner for Peavey.

Re: 5150 vs. XXX

I wwould have to agree, at this point unless there is a pressing need to make the change I'd wait for the JSX and see. I have a XXX so I am a fan of them but the JSX really looks to be a nice improvement on a lot of the XXX features.

Re: 5150 vs. XXX

5150's a one-trick-pony, so since you're going for versatility, I would say either JSX or Triple XXX.

Re: 5150 vs. XXX

sweet.....JSX sounds like it will be a killer! Probably i am going to go to guitar center and try out the triple XXX...see if it will compare to my 5150. I am having some doubts though. Cause the 5150 is one good amp. I don't know if the distotion is going to compare. Well i guess i will see. :burnout:

Re: 5150 vs. XXX

Why limit your outlook to Peavey? Check out the JSX, but check out other stuff, too!

Re: 5150 vs. XXX

JSX is a great amp, but it doesn't have as much gain as a 5150 or a Triple X. I've played it and I like it a lot, but if you're looking for extremely high gain, go with a Rectifier, XXX, Bogner Uberschall or Diezel Herbert.

Re: 5150 vs. XXX

As soon as I get the chance, I'm going to buy another 5150 I head. I love that one sound!! When my first one blew up, I replaced it with a DSL, but for freaky, high gain madness, the 5150 sounds great...I think the recifiers are so so. I'm not crazy about the one tone that they create. What I've always done for versatility is to use a second amp. Currently, I run my DSL for heavy stuff and a Hot Rod Deluxe for my cleaner, bluesy stuff. Pretty good combo. Not everyone can do this, but it's my favorite solution as I've never been happy with what one amp can do.

Re: 5150 vs. XXX

Does anybody know where i can get a bias mod done to my 5150 for under a 100 bucks? I think this might be the route i go. See if it will clean things up better.

Re: 5150 vs. XXX

Do you think they will make the JSX in a combo amp? I'm asking because I want one, but I definitely don't need the 100 watts. I don't care if it doesn't have as much gain as a xxx. xxx's have a crazy amount anyway and I would bet the JSX has plenty to work with. The cleans will be great also, better than the xxx.

that's a good question..I would imagine that they'd make it into a combo...

how much gain does a person really need anyway? with today's high gain staging, anything over the 2 o'clock position is getting too saturated to do anything with anyway..and even that's pushing it...

satch's tone was REALLY grindy on the g3 tour...really heavy without being overly distorted..

anywho, I think this amp's going to have as much useable gain as the XXX..and being that satch is pretty demanding, the clean channel will sing as well..

I just looked on musician's friend..they have the head but not a combo

100 watts isn't too bad for a head though...that's pretty loud, but not so loud that you can't turn it up a little higher to drive those power tubes..I bet a combo of 50 watts would be even better though =D

xxx vs 5150: on this and HC forum, I have read/heard clips - the xxx does not do recordings well. Nonpoint's distortion is not my favorite on their recordings - they use the xxx.

this site is kinda cool for listening to some clips of mods.

I have recorded the XXX a couple of different times in my studio with great results both times. The key is not to oversaturate the gain and leave it more open sounding. Then layer it about four times (or more) to get a really pumping sound. Same goes with about any high gain amp, 5150 included.

Re: 5150 vs. XXX

Im sure everyone else has probably told you by now, but FORGET the XXX completely, go for the JSX, i heard Joe live during G3 this year and again live on the radio last night. His tone was great on G3, but i think that was a very early prototype as it sounded quite different and was in a Triple XXX case. But the tone i heard last night was absolutely incredible, like a crazy high-end boutique amp! I thought it was a recording at first and was salivating, only to have the radio host and him talk about the stuff he was playing including the JSX which Joe seemed extremely happy with. The amp is similar to a Triple XXX, but well.......just A TON better!!! I seriously would prop it up to any boutique amp out there. I hope to play one soon!

Re: 5150 vs. XXX

I've heard and read only good things about the JSX. But seriously, why limit yourself to Peavey? Look out beyond!
