57 Classic plus in a Strat..

Anyone tried this?
I just got a Strat and I am getting ready to pull the Plus from my Traditional and I am thinking of experimenting..
I am solely looking for blues modern country and blues rock tones..
I plan on doing split wiring on the Strat with one tone for the bridge and a .022 with a 500k and
another tone with a .047 and 250k for the neck and middle..
That cool in between Strat neck and middle and single coil neck tone and a a humbucker on the bridge with PAF style tones..
I think the lower output would be badass in a Strat.. I plan on tapping the humbucker for single coil tones with the middle but I haven't figured that part of the circuit out in my head yet..

Advice and prior knowledge is greatly appreciated! I am goin mad scientist on this one..

I would think they'd sound better in a Strat than in a Gibson, where they're too dull and muddy for my tastes.

I am thinking that as well. It may work with Alder and a Rosewood fretboard.. Hopefully it will brighten it up some.. I absolutely hated the Plus in my Traditional.. It sounds all stuffy and lifeless like you said especially with some a TS thru a clean channel on dirty blues tones and thru my crunch channel. I am going to keep the 57 in the neck for now and play with it.. I may yank it and put in a PG though..

Re: 57 Classic plus in a Strat..

I pulled the 57+ because it was too bright for my tastes. I would think it would get more shrill in a Strat. That being said I would pop it in and give it a listen. We can all speculate but no one knows for sure until you give it a try. Personally I would be more inclined to try the 57 neck pickup in the bridge.

I think all of Duncan's PAF's sound better than '57's.

good example of people hearing and/or wanting different things from the same pup.

if the 57+ is bright then the 57 neck would be brighter and thinner

You would think but not in my experience. I found the 57 to be fuller and warmer with more mids. The 57+ had treble overtones especially when distorted that drove me crazy. Keep in mind my tone is very deep and dark. In my first band I aspired to have Iommi's tone.

From Gibson - ’57 Classic provides warm, full tone with a balanced response, packing that classic Gibson PAF humbucker crunch.

On the 57+ - They are the perfect bridge-position companion to the ’57 Classic, delivering just a little more of "the sweet stuff" without sacrificing any of the rich vintage tone.

In my experience the sweet stuff was more treble than I wanted to deal with. The funny thing was I put a 498T in the bridge and the guitar sounded great. However, it would not play nice with the 57n. Individually they both sounded great. Middle position was beyond underwhelming. I was going to go with a 498/490 setup when I decided to go with the WLH set. I could not be happier

Re: 57 Classic plus in a Strat..

Ive put a pair of 57s in my strat, not the plus tho.
It was ok. Great for slide.
I also put alnico 5 magnets in the pickups. That was cool.
Just be aware that 57s are long legged pickups, so you need to either modify the legs, or make sure your strat is routed for buckers. The regular fender "swimming pool" route is not quite deep enough.

Not really. Throughout the years, the original design made by Tom Holmes in the early '90s, suffered the usual cheapen-down process at Gibson.

The early ones, up to 1996, were excellent-sounding. I would know, I *own* a '57 Classic/'57 Classic Plus set from 1994 and they're keepers. Around 1996/97, they changed one or several suppliers of magnets/screws/slugs/bar keeper/ winder machine settings, so they become a bit harsher, but bearable. Then in 2006 they changed from PE to brown-dyed Poly wire and for me, the outcome is not better than asian OEM p'ups, costing less than 20% their asking price.

So it's VERY possible that the allegedly same p'up would sound as polar opposites.

HTH,

Re: 57 Classic plus in a Strat..

I think I am going to sell the 57 and put the cash towards some single coils.
I have 4 humbucker guitars.. I am just not a big single coil guy but I am gonna try some here.
What is a good way to go with single coils for a dark smokey blues sound?
I also like that fluid piano like Strat tone way more than that quacky bell like crap..

I appreciate it! I am still kinda up in arms with it.. I am not into strats at all so this is a new venture for me..
This will be my 3rd strat since 1994 and my first one was a MIJ with a floyd and Dimarzio PAF Pro. My 2nd was an 89 American Standard that looked just like this..
I didn't mod either one of them. I don't know if I can get the sound that's in my head with a strat?

I agree here. I am still on the fence with the ones in my Epi. I really WANT to hate them... But darn if they dont sound pretty good. 57 classic neck/57 classic plus in bridge. I do have to roll the tone down when playing thru my Splawn because the bridge is very bright. I dont think Ive ever had to do that with any other pup I have in my guitars currently.

But, I have found that every guitar is diff. Even if the body wood is something that is supposed to be bright, or dark, the individual guitar can differ. So, if you have the pup, try it.
