'57 Twin-Amp

I have been considering a Fender '57 Tweed Twin-Amp RI for quite some time now and will probably use it for all clean. I got a Gibson GA5 and a Vox AD15VT for my overdrive tones and I was definitely going to buy some nice pedals soon to put in front of my GA5 and my Twin-Amp if I get it. I was wondering if would sound any good at low levels? I played the thing extensively, but mostly overdrivven in a sound proof room in the back of guitar center and Im so sad that I will never be able to get those sounds ever again!!! But I was going to use it for cleans anyway, any suggestions? Anybody here who has the amp? Any feedback? Thanks.

Given the design of this amp (concertina PI like a Pro/Super/Bandmaster), it is OK for cleans to a certain moderate level, but it doesn't have the headroom of a 5F6A Bassman (long tail PI). The dual rectifiers help, but my '56 is definitely not a clean machine, even with ceramic speakers, dual 5AR4's and 7581A's. I never understood why Fender didn't put the long tail PI in the lo-po Twin (maybe because they came out with the '80 watt' 5F8 pretty soon after...). I know a few people who have the RI Twin and I have used them a few times on stage and they are not particularly clean at moderate volumes. You could spend 1/3 the money on a Bassman RI and get better cleans...or get a SF Pro Reverb for that matter.

Yeah, that's a lot of money to spend on a 1 trick pony amp......but it's a heck of an amp too!

I just sold my Bassman LTD 4-10, and have to say it's one of the best clean toned amps I've ever owned. Mucho headroom and a fat, harmonically rich tone. If you want reverb on those types of amps, you can bridge the channels with an EH Holy Grail in between the channels, so you can mix in a little wetness with the 2nd channel volume.

theres much better amps for clean tones IMO

then again i don't really like that amp at all, the '59 ri bassman just kills it for cleans AND dirt

Blah blah kills for you perhaps...but that amp is friggin awesome, and is not for all players.
Great Tweed amp for sure, and it plays loud enough, and is not as flabby as the 4x10 Bassman to me.
Those Weber designed speakers are great
It is one of the amps that I am getting myself someday.
Love it.

Those 57 Twins are great amps, nothing else sounds quite like them. I think that they are a tad over priced but thats just me...if you want one don't settle for anything else...

When I saw Cream at the Garden EC played thru 4 of those and his tone was quite impressive. A Strat thru that sounded sweet. He had each set at different volume levels apparently for Crunch, clean etc.

which amps do you think better clean tones than the fender twin?

from my (limited) experience, the fender twin has the best clean channel!

The tweed Twin is a 50W amp an is not very clean to my ears, but the BF Twin is 80watts and it is very loud and very clean. I'd say between th BF, SF Twins and the Dual Showmans I don't think there is a cleaner tube amp!

those dual showmans are CLEAN. too clean for my tastes. ive never gotten a good dirty tone from one, with or without pedals

later twins, IMO, have much better cleans

also bassmans, showmans, vibroverbs, even the deluxe reverb has a better clean tone

again of course all in my opinion

and when i played one i was using a humbucker guitar so that might be part of it

The only ones I've seen in person are solid-states.

Someone is selling his twin with busted tubes... I'm thinking of making an offer... problem is, how would I know it's just the tubes which are busted?

show up with a complete fresh set of tubes and you'll know....

that's a big problem... i don't have tubes... and im not pulling out the tubes on my jtm (which would have different power tubes nwy)

I like the 57 reissue Twin for the looks.... but there is a custom colour covered 65 Twin reissue at the local store at a reduced price! That is nice!!!!

I just checked out the Fender website... that's the Bassman 10 right? 50 watts? looks bulky, like a peavey classic 50.

What's a good price for it?

that's it. New they go for a little over a grand, used they go for between 500 & 800

they've had a lot of versions of it, but IMO the new version is the best one
