5881s In A Fender Super Champ X2..........

I had done this before and then I returned the stock 6V6s........until today. I had replaced the stock 6V6s with NOS 5881s and it reminded me just how good it sounds. LOTS more clean Blackface headroom.

I should try one in my Vibro Champ XD so it doesn't compress as fast. Did you just remove the tube cage and pop it in there?
How is the stock speaker handling the wattage?

I also have a 5881 in my Fender Silverface Vibro Champ and it sounds excellent. Exchanged the 6V6s for 5881s and that is it. The wattage typically will only provide the power of what the amp components allow. Not more wattage, just more headroom. The speaker does performs well.

Heck yeah! I got a Super Champ XD for $50 because it had something "wrong" with it, which turned out be a bad 6V6. I popped in a pair of old GE 6L6 tubes I had laying around, and it's ran fine since then. I agree that the Fender models sound better with them instead of the 6V6's. I routinely run it around 6 on the volume and the speaker and amp seem to be doing fine.

That's a nice score! Do you still have your Vibro Champ XD?

I need to see if the tube cage is removable on my Fender Excelsior Pro, to accommodate a couple 6L6's. I already did the BillM tone pot mod on that amp, which was a nice improvement.
