59/custom hybrid mag swapping

Re: 59/custom hybrid mag swapping

These kinds of posts offer absolutely nothing in the way of knowledge or anything positive..People need to click out, click off and lay low or the admins will do it!

Re: 59/custom hybrid mag swapping

It came and I swapped it this afternoon while changing my strings. Played it a tiny bit to make sure everything was working right, no issues or whatever. I know the mag takes a while to settle so I'll get back on it in a day or two to see how it sounds.

I put an a8 in my 59/c hybrid and its great. Adds much more "fluidity" to the feel with out changing the tone much. Wont go back.

oh my! Just when I thought I was complacent with my hybrid.. I must try this. I dunno, I think Alnico 8 is like midas. Everything Ive put it in turns to gold

I never understood the "settling in" claims about magnets - I just swap mine out and play. I'd really like to hear an A/B with the same pickup, same guitar, amp etc. right after a mag swap and like 24 hours after the swap (which seems to be how long people claim it takes to "settle in"

Other than that, is it out of place to ask the mods to clean up the thread a little bit? I mean, we all know that the only appropriate response to opinions dissonant with your own (especially those about magnet swapping) is naked hostility, but is there any way the Swedens of the forum can see the content about falloffthebonetone's magnet swapping without wading through the proverbial eastern border of Ukraine?

I've done this before too - if you like that super high output "my fingers are as unto gods of thunder" feeling of a8, go for it. The only problem is that you do lose a lot of the awesome dynamics you get from the hybrid in the first place. For a shred stick, I would use it 10 times out of 10. But the 59/Custom w/ UOA5 in my les paul is fantastic because it sounds like you play - you dig in and it growls, you back off and it sings. Very dynamic IMO with that magnet.

Cool! Care to share your brief initial impressions?

Nothing real yet, only plugged it into my crappy amp for a minute and flipped through the positions to make sure nothing horrible went wrong like scratchiness or screeching or phase problems and everything sounded straight. I also turned the pickup around so the hotter slug coil is now closer to the bridge for a little extra brightness. It balanced a lot better with the jazz neck right away but I also raised the pickup slightly. Less bass for sure but I was kind of going for that, it felt more fun to dig into the strings than usual and it was a bit more "honky" than before but not much. When I get this thing into my handwired 50w head and cab and really take it for a spin I will post a new thread reviewing it. I'll also run it through my buddy's Mesa Nomad and all of his effects and see how it handles it all. I was basically shooting to fatten the sound with less boom and bite with more articulation. I had considered how bassy and powerful my amp already was and compensated for that with an A2 instead of an A8.
