'59/hybrid custom in a music man stingray guitar bridge?

Anybody have luck (or better even a demo) of a '59/custom hybrid in a mahogany body with maple neck, rosewood fingerboard?

I bought a new Music Man Stingray RS this July 4th at GC. I love the guitar - especially now with it setup right - but I feel like the bridge needs to be a bit warmer and have better harmonics. The current pickup has great shimmer but lacks mid and bass. I don't really want a hotter pickup.

I have a '59 trembucker in a parts bin - I might just pop that in for reference, but it has an unsanded and I think unreferenced magnet in it (if I am reading what I put on the bottom plate correctly, years later).

Either way I am intrigued how this 59/custom would sound in the guitar.

The 59/C won't have the mids that you want. What pickup and magnet do you have in there right now? It looks to me from your description that a simple mag swap might be in order.

It's the stock factory pickup.

Made by ernie ball/music man. Stuffed in the guitar by them at the factory.

Other than that I have no idea...

The Hybrid may work, but 'warmer & more harmonics' has me puzzled. It is sort of one or the other.

Re: '59/hybrid custom in a music man stingray guitar bridge?

When I read 'more harmonics' it came across in my mind as 'a richer, less fundamental tone' which goes in hand with a thick/warmer pickup; but yeah 'better pinch harmonics' wouldn't lend itself toward that sort of pickup ;) Congrats on the Stingray.

Re: '59/hybrid custom in a music man stingray guitar bridge?

See, I was thinking 'upper harmonics' like the overtones you get from feedback.

Re: '59/hybrid custom in a music man stingray guitar bridge?

warmer and rich sounding - harmonic overtones, not pinch harmonics.

Have a hybrid in my Carvin DC 400 with the Mahogany neck and body ebony board and a Quilt top and love it. Big round harmonics out the wazoo and matches perfecly with the Sentient I have in the neck. PS Pick harmonics galore if I want them so--

The guitar is bright and thin sounding. Stock pickups.

I am still looking for a good pickup.

Mahogany body
Baked Maple neck
Rosewood Fingerboard
Corian type nut
Music Man vintage style tremolo

Can you tell us what type of music you play and the type of tones you’re looking to get? What amp you’re playing?
Warmer and more harmonics is still a little vague to go on.

Try a Dimarzio Gravity Storm in the bridge. BIG warm and very articulate A 5 pickup that should be a decent cosmetic match with the factory Dimarzio in the neck on your Stimgray. Have one with a PAF Joe in my Carvin ST 300.

I have the hybrid 59/C installed in my PRS S2 Custom semi-hollow at the moment. Mohogany/maple. Its an interesting pickup! I can really hear the 59 - vintage tone in there. When using overdrive it reminds me of a slightly more modern sound. I have a Jazz in the neck and its pretty good, but I think it would probably go nicer with a more vintagy neck pickup.. just my instinct at the moment.. that could all change! I quite like the jazz neck in that guitar so Ill probably swap out the hybrid.. Ive been thinking a standard 59 bridge would be nice actually.. not a combo I thought Id ever consider... But I also thought the Jazz pup was a bit boring until I put one in that guitar!

This is a great description of the Hybrid. I have 2, one in a Steinberger, and one in a Warmoth HSS Strat. In the Steinberger, it pairs well with an Alnico II Pro, and in the Warmoth, it is with a Classic Strat Stack and Five Two.

Oow nice!! I have an Alnico 2 Pro and Mmm I can imagine it with the Hybrid/C - its almost like my mouth is watering thinking about that combo!!
I really want to try the Five Two for strat! Do you have yours in the neck or middle?
I have some STKs for strat that Ill be installing soon!

Re: '59/hybrid custom in a music man stingray guitar bridge?

I literally put one into the same type of guitar that you are describing, this evening. So far I like it, but I haven't played it enough yet, and I'm about to go to bed. I'm going to play it more tomorrow and I will report back.

My Five Two is in the middle. I did some interesting wiring with it- the neck Classic Stack is rw/rp. I wrote a blog about the wiring here.

Good read!
I was looking at getting one of those mega E switches. But I dont use splits usually. What you did was interesting though - with the STK and eliminating the hum - I hate that! The Hybrid 59/C seems like a great humbucker to split though!
I have a HSS strat that I wouldn't mind putting another 59/C in!

Re: '59/hybrid custom in a music man stingray guitar bridge?

The Hybrid is one of the best humbuckers to split. Some humbuckers just don't work well that way. I don't like to switch guitars, so I need an instrument that can get a bunch of different sounds, but with simple controls. So I wire them to get the sounds I need and use rather than have a bunch that I have to pass over to get to the sound I want.

Re: '59/hybrid custom in a music man stingray guitar bridge?

I really liked this demo - but I dont have a rotory switch and don't have any idea about different types of phasing or reversing mags/wiring.. Im not sure I would use all the different sounds. I feel like there's 2 or 3 really great sounds so why do I want to worry about a sound that isn't as nice. But I really have no idea - thats just my brain trying to rationalise something.

I just played it more this morning. So far I'm really liking it. A lot more than I thought I would.
