59 or jazz neck pu for 7string (mahogany)?

Hi forum,

Title says it all. I have a mahogany 7-string and want to try a new neck pickup. I like the 59 in my gibby sg standard, but I'm not sure whether the 59 will sound as good paired with the low b string. That is, will the 59 be too muddy/boomy in a mahogany 7-string? If so, would the jazz be a better choice? I play metal, custom in the bridge.

Thanks,
Jim

i would think the jazz would be more even sounding

I've started wiring neck humbuckers in parallel to get rid of mud. It lowers the output some, so you can use higher output pickups and still have decent clarity. (I just built a Strat and used a 16k bridge pickup in the neck wired in parallel.)

Thanks for the replies. Assuming I'm wiring serial...

Other folks who have 7 strings with either/both of these neck pickups in their experience can give me advice?

Thanks
Jim

I'm not fond of the Jazz 7. Its too even and bleh sounding. Maybe for jazz where you want a real even tone it would be good to me it didnt have enough character. I havent tried the 59-7 yet. But i have tried the FS7 in the neck and that might be right up your alley if you do distorted leads on the neck. I dig it. It stays tight on the lows and the highs just sing. Are you sold on only using SD pickups? Ive also used some from dimarzio and rio grande. The rio grande muy grande in 7 string sound excellent. You can do solos and rhythm work with it. Its got a nice rolled off high end its a mid output pickup. its not made specific for neck or bridge but ive used it in the neck and its very nice if you got a hot bridge pickup.

Re: 59 or jazz neck pu for 7string (mahogany)?

Thanks Edgecrusher. That was my fear for the jazz 7. The only reason I considered it is because I am worried that the 59 7 will sound bad (muddy) on the low b string specifically. Other than that concern, I am a really big fan of the 59 neck pickup and would be happy to use it. I would be more than happy to use dimarzios but my guitar would require routing to fit them, and I'm really not into that idea.

Anyone use the 59 7 neck pick up in mahogany and can tell me what they think (especially with how the low b sounds?)?

Look into the distortion neck maybe. I think they make a 7 string version
