59 vs 57 classic.

Re: 59 vs 57 classic.

they might both be classified as PAF style pickups, but that's about the only thing they have in common. i'd say the '57s are kinda fat and airy, while still being fairly bright for alnico 2 pickups. '59s on the other hand are really tight and clear, somewhat scooped, just a bit more compressed. of course, that's just a general comparison.

Re: 59 vs 57 classic.

59- tight , bright, a little scooped. Kind of a 'jack of all trades, master of none' kind of pup. Very versatile.

57- more mids & low mids than 59, softer attack and treble, has a certain texture that some call 'grainy'. Overall less articulate, but a very musical pup.

Re: 59 vs 57 classic.

'59 - Lots of treble and bass, scooped mids. Sharp high-end. Tight low-end. Well defined, articulate.

Neck model can be boomy (especially in LP's); bridge can be a little bright and thin. These are remedied by lowering the bass side of the neck PU, and using 250K pots or a warmer magnet in the bridge.

'57 - Lots of mids, rounded high-end, loose low-end. Warm.

Neck model can be dark and muddy; bridge can have a funky thin 'ribbony' sound. These are remedied by putting an A5 or A4 in the neck, and an UOA5 or RC A4 in the bridge.

Re: 59 vs 57 classic.

If you check out some vintage Robben Ford and Scott Henderson (Tribal Tech) you'll hear why I always use 59's in my HB guitars.

Re: 59 vs 57 classic.

Aren't they both different mags, AlNiCo V vs AlNiCo II?

Yes, which gives them very diffferent EQ's. To me, if you want an A2 PAF that isn't muddy in the neck, get a Duncan PG, A2P, or Seth. They're wound differently, and are clearer. I am pleased with the way they sound, but have put A5's in by Gibson neck HB's ('57, BB, and 490R).
