'59 vs Air Classic?

Re: '59 vs Air Classic?

some good recommendations, i also wonder about the custom 5, it says it's a twice as hot 59?

Re: '59 vs Air Classic?

its not twice as hot but definitely got more push with a similar eq curve

Re: '59 vs Air Classic?

The Custom 5 is also quite a bit more mid scooped than the '59. I always liked the '59, but not so much the C5.

Re: '59 vs Air Classic?

I use a Custom 5 in a very mid-heavy guitar, and now it sounds like I want it to sound.

which one of the medium hot pickups (perpetual burn, custom 5, screamin demon etc...) has the most dynamics? kinda the opposite of the JB, which is really compressed

Re: '59 vs Air Classic?

Why is it that I think that the JB has plenty of dynamic? Maybe because I compare it to an X2N?

Hmm, I'd say the 59/Custom Hybrid. But you lose dynamics as the pickup gets hotter (that is really the point).

Custom5 was just the ticket for me in a mid-heavy mahogany guitar too. Perfect.
I agree that in a balanced sounding guitar, it might well sound more scooped than a 59B.

Re: '59 vs Air Classic?

I guess what i mean with edge is a little bit more bite or aggression, my guitar has a mahogany body so maybe that's why it's a bit on the warmer smoother side? not sure

For e tones you are talking I would go the Hybrid or maybe a Perpetual Burn. The Air Classic is going to be slightly lower in output and a little darker than the 59 so wrong way. The Hybrid is super articulate has a medium out put but feels much bigger the Perpet in particular is a very articulate pickup that is pretty unique and works well for the type material you are talking. Have a zebra Perpet that I bought for a particular guitar then went with a Hybrid in it on ebay at $90 if interested in the Perpet PM Me we can talk a reduced $ if you save me the fees.

Have had all on your list in dynamics the Hybrid Perpet Demon and custom 5 in that order.

thx for the offer but i live in europe so it would not be economical to buy it from you, but i'll definitely check out the hybrid pickup

Re: '59 vs Air Classic?

I put an Air Classic Neck in the bridge of my superstrat (Ash body with maple cap, rosewood fingerboard) and the 59 bridge is FAR more lively there than the Air Classic Neck.

59 bridge sure is lively and detailed, almost single-coil'esque, but it lacks some meat for my taste, it's a bit too polite if that makes sense

Re: '59 vs Air Classic?

More bite/edge/aggression than the 59 without being high output and compressed like the JB...
The first thing that came to my mind was what Mincer said, the Duncan Custom.
Other best guesses: The 78, 59/Custom hybrid, Saturday Night Special, Full Shred Bridge, Screamin Demon, Maybe the Slash A2Pro Bridge.

Curious - What pickup is 'The 78'?

In the *neck*

So do you have a 59neck in the bridge at the moment or a 59brige in the *neck*?

I think the Air Classics and (lots of Dimarzio) just sound and feel different.. But when you do a shootout with a Seymour Duncan pickup you didnt think sounded great - it does sound great! Feel has a bit to perseption too. 59s have a vintage tone to them..

Im not sure what music you play? Or what Amp?

The 59neck PGbridge is a nice combo. Ive just installed the 59/custom hybrid - it is very cool - still has the 59 vintage tone. All the custom pickups I like! Theyre more 'modern' sounding than a traditional PAF.

It also really depends on your amp - or if youre using one at all!!?

The Duncan Distortion is also a good pickup! But not PAF tones. If you want high output try the Dimebucker!!

+1 for the Screamin' Demon! One of the greatest pickups ever made! You can get great metal tones from it but its not high output and still has a hint of PAF-like quality.

But if youre looking for that 'air' feeling.. maybe look into a mag swap! - A2 mags.. Apparently the 59 with A4 mag is a popular swap!?

And maybe try something like the Seymour Duncan pickup booster pedal. I think it could give you a great output boost - great pedal!

screamin demon description sounds like i might like it, unfortunately finding a suitable pickup is even harder than finding a suitable pedal or amp because you can't just try the pickup out in the shop!
