59 vs jazz for metal

Sorry this has probably been asked...
Anyway i need a neck pickup that gives me a similar tone to that of dime from pantera but not identical, id be using it for solos and cleans. id be using a distortion in the bridge, the pickup should also sound t similar to that of synyster g from avenged sevenfold which means a more harsh solo tone aswell. i want the sustain to be really insane... but smoothe, i would be abusing pinch harmonics alot so watever picks those up better is good and have good cleans, id be using quite abit of gain, what are your suggestions, pros and cons of each...

Rig id be using:
Schecter blackjack avenger 6 fr (mahogany body and neck, ebony fretboard)
I would be running it through a marshall 6100 with el34s and a boss distortion pedal or super overdrive pedal.

edit: whats the difference between 59 bridge and 59 neck?, would the bridge positions give longer sustain because of the higher output? would i be sacrificing the cleans if i went down that route?

Re: 59 vs jazz for metal

sustain isnt necessarily a function of output. But the cleans would be fine from a 59 neck. Insane sustain is really going to come from compression. For that I would go with the Jazz over the 59. Even then though its not a very compressed pickup only a little more so.

Re: 59 vs jazz for metal

what about the 59 bridge vs jazz bridge?

Ive never stuck a Jazz bridge in the neck so i'm making something of an educated guess here. But its not radically different from the Jazz Neck. Its a little louder and little less bright. In the neck should do just fine. But heres an idea. Why not use a Distortion Neck?

Re: 59 vs jazz for metal

a little too harsh, cleans are not as good, i just prefer an alnico pup in the neck

Re: 59 vs jazz for metal

So I guess you decided not to try the Jazz Neck after all the suggestions in your previous thread?

For High Gain the Jazz Neck IMO is much more clear and articulate than the 59 Neck...I don't have experience with the 59 Bridge in the Neck but It's what Dimebag used...just get the Jazz Neck already, you won't regret it!!

Re: 59 vs jazz for metal

+1 on the Jazz neck. I have one in my Iceman it more than does the job. If you are looking for sick sustain check out a Godlyke TWA Triskelion Pedal.

Re: 59 vs jazz for metal

I'll echo what these guys have said. If you want good cleans, and something that works with metal, especially with a Distortion in the bridge, you pretty much have to go with the Jazz.

Re: 59 vs jazz for metal

Yeah, let me add to the chorus and say that for metal it's Jazz all the way.

I tried both in various guitars, and settled on the following:

- the 59 neck shines in a LP with low/medium gain. Think fat blues/rock soloing (Gary Moore). Add more gain and it farts out and looses all the definition - and there's not much definition to begin with. Can't handle "br00talz"! lol...

- the Jazz neck shines in a high-end hardtail Ibanez RG with high gain - it has a definition that never goes away, no matter how much gain you apply. Cleans are great too.

Re: 59 vs jazz for metal

1) What type of metal? There are just too many subgenres. Thrash? Sludge? Nu? Hair? Heavy Metal (ie. pretty much everything from Europe since Led Zeppelin, or even before)?

2) I would say the '59 is better for your medium to heavy rock tones. Not because you can't push the pickup, I think some of the amazing nuances of it, fllutey almost single coil clarity, get lost when you run REALLY heavy gain and compression. The SH-2 seems less affected by amp settings, being consistent no matter how you dial it.

Re: 59 vs jazz for metal

ik i was about to buy it yesterday but i just wasnt sure, i always have second thoughts :/ doesnt seymour duncan have like an exchange thing if u dont like the pickups

Re: 59 vs jazz for metal

thrash, heavy, groove and hard rock... think pantera, metallica, slayer and avenged sevenfold.... but really its the dimebag type tone im after with lots of versatility, and when i turn up the gain it would be only for solos thats it...

Re: 59 vs jazz for metal

You want the Jazzn for the neck. Also you might like a PATB-1n model.

As for the sustain Syn uses a sustainer system in his guitars so thats where his endless sustain comes from.

Re: 59 vs jazz for metal

The Jazz neck is actually hotter than the 59 neck, but the 59 bridge is hotter than the Jazz bridge. I've seen a lot of people just say the 59 is hotter generally. I wonder why the Jazz bridge isn't put in the neck more often now that we mention it. Either way, while Dime used a 59 bridge pickup (which is hotter than the 59 neck pickup to compensate for output difference in pickup positions) My favorite neck humbucker is the Jazz because it is very bright and snappy but warms up really nicely. Awesome for flutey solos and the presence of it shines through gain. The thing works great with the Distortion in the bridge too. It will get you Dime's neck position tones just fine, you might even like what you get better.

Re: 59 vs jazz for metal

Well...

If Pantera is what you're after...

And high gain soloing is all you want...

*Oh, and instead of a Duncan Distortion, get a Synyster Invader. Cuz, you gotta have those Chrome/Gold/White poles, cuz they change...the tone?

*Oh, and don't worry, even if you get an actual vintage Bill Lawrence, '59bridge, his entire rig, you still won't sound identical to Dimebag. Buy Pantera stuff to your heart's content.

no i dont want to sound identical just a similar solo tone, and good cleans, and the invader is such a pile of junk, played the synyster one and the cleans really sucked hard and it just had too much bass.... the distortion is much more clear and better with more speedy riffs and nails a metallica/slayer tone well, and close to a dimebag and syn one...

Sounds like when I put my toe down on my wah pedal but the pedal doesn't get as harsh as the wah.
