59 was awesome for metal. What next?

I took the dimarzio 36th out of my carvin and put in a Duncan 59. I really loved the change. I really wish Id tried that pickup years ago.

I have a Epiphone 70s v that I want to change the stock pickups. I loved the 59 and I'm a huge fan of the custom 59 hybrid. I like my guitars to be totally different but still in the function if that makes sense?

So I'm really looking hard at these and I'm listing them in order of curiosity. I am playing death doom metal and I have a really high gain amp. I enjoy good attack and a powerful low end ( like the 59) it doesn't have to be a super tight pickup. My engl and od808 can handle that.

1. Slash 3.0
2. Hades gate
3. 78
4. Pearly gates
5. Custom 5 (if it's more scoooped than the 59 I may not like it but as much as 59 I think I will)
6. Whole lotta humbucker

For metal and given what I've been liking what are your opinions about any of these in a flying v? I'm also open to other suggestions. I don't want to go over 300 dollars on a set though.

maybe try the slash 3.0. ive not tried em, but they seem like the would suit you well

I liked WLH's when I tried them, but I like '59's too. I play Metal too.

But WLH's are worth a try. They're a bit less scoopy than '59's and a bit hotter, but still within that realm.

I don't think the Custom 5 is more scooped than the '59, but IMO, the scoop in the '59 is tilted a bit more towards the treble, and the Custom 5 is tilted more towards the bass by comparison.

I would also consider the PAF Pro. I liked that one in the bridge as well.

I dont really play metal. Played thrash years ago though.
I have a 59n and WLHb in both my SG and a all Mahogany Charvel TOM bridge axe. They balance extremly well. Flipping the toggle there is no volune drop at all just a shift in tones.
I can see a WLH handling some metal especially if you like the 59.
That said when I do wanna relive my metal days I pull out my neck thru maple walnut axe wirh Dimarzio Super it just gets it done.

I can't say enough good things about the WLH set. I have them in two guitars. They can handle any genre I throw at them.

With that being said, the 78s are IMO, one of the best sets Duncan offers. I am currently working on finishing two guitars with 78s.

PRS Dragon 2 pickups are a contender.
Lots of bargain used sets out there, from players that upgraded to 57/08 and others.

JB -- lots of metal players seem to like that one. Use some sort of pedal to tighten up the bottom end.

Get the anniversary set

of those you listed, i've used the 78, Pearly gates, Custom 5, and Whole lotta humbucker. C5 will have the most power in the low end imo. I think all will do metal fairly well with your set up, and i found the 78/PG/WLH to have a pretty similar feel/dna, but i would actually go with the pearly gates. What it lacks in low end it makes up for with a nasty crunch and bite that i don't get from the other 3 pickups.
