59N and Pearly Gates Bridge - Good Combo?

I talked to one guy whom I trust well and he said just go PG/PG but I just wanted to see if anyone had tried a 59N and a Pearly Gates bridge together.

Epi Les Paul, using it for classic rock, blues rock, zz top, skynard, aerosmith etc the standard fare.

I had a Alnico II neck and 59 Bridge that I liked a good bit, that guitar is gone, I have a PGBJ now and want to find a good neck to go with it.

Thanks for any advice!

Re: 59N and Pearly Gates Bridge - Good Combo?

I prefer the PGn but using a 59n certainly wouldn't be a "mismatch." I really like the way that the PGn can do "dirty" cleans on a Marshall-type amp. I think that it's easier to get a smooth tone from a 59n vs a PGn because of the flatter midrange (no strong mid push) and the absence of the upper mid spike that makes the PG so edgy. All depends on what you're looking for in a neck pup.

Re: 59N and Pearly Gates Bridge - Good Combo?

thats the combo i have in my epi LP, it was recommended by a good guitar shop too.

i really love the 59N, its creamy and sustains forever.

the pg bridge on the other hand, i dunno, everyone else loves it, i cant get a sound i'm really happy with out of it. its TOO lp for me.

if i was going to do it again, i'd either run 59/59's or seth lovers

so it seems to work for everyone else!

Re: 59N and Pearly Gates Bridge - Good Combo?

They're both PAF's and as such should work well together, like pretty much any PAF's. I've noticed looking at used PU's for sale, there's few PGN's listed (happy owners), and more PGB's put up for sale (less than happy owners). You'll see guys here praise the PG pair or the PGN, but not as many use a PGB with something else in the neck. For what it's worth.

Re: 59N and Pearly Gates Bridge - Good Combo?

yes bluesman335 I am a happy PGN owner and the PGB was not very long in my hands.

One VERY good combo is PGN/59B ; SH55/59B.
And even I have now a SH55N and WCR darkburst B in the LP -
I am still looking for the next axe to stuff em in.

Re: 59N and Pearly Gates Bridge - Good Combo?

You should put the PG bridge in the neck and get a '59 bridge or even better a Custom bridge. I got a PG bridge pup in my SG neck and it's really sweet. I like it better than the '59 neck I had before it. The low end is there, but not so boomy.

Re: 59N and Pearly Gates Bridge - Good Combo?

I used that combo for a lil' over a year in my ltd ec-1000... most folks expect to get something weird out of an A5 neck paired with an A2 bridge pick-up. IME, that was a really good combo. I just had to set the '59 a little further from the string than I usually do and it sounded really good: nice, woody mellow clean tones from the neck and very crunchy and biting tones from the bridge.

Re: 59N and Pearly Gates Bridge - Good Combo?

That's the standard set up in my HH Big Apple Strat. It sounds great in a
strat, don't know how it would sound in a LP. My Big Apple has coil splits also, and it is the best sounding split coils I've ever had. I usually find splits
sound so thin, they are unusable. Not so on this one.

Re: 59N and Pearly Gates Bridge - Good Combo?

My thoughts in bullet format
*Good combo - 59/PG, so is PG/PG A2/PG, PG/59, 59/59, etc....hard to miss.
*PG neck is best pup overall for LP style guitars
*PG bridge is awesome and underrated
*PG is the pup we really think about when we talk about classic PAF's

Thanks for all the replies so far.
(Big Ace fan here as well man!)

Anyway I am going to keep looking around and see if a good deal pops up.

Re: 59N and Pearly Gates Bridge - Good Combo?

How does the PGn compare to the Seth Neck?
I have a Seth Neck in my LP & love it but hey, I'm a PU slut! ;-)

Re: 59N and Pearly Gates Bridge - Good Combo?

I had that combo in my LP, love the 59N, could not get to love the PG brdige despite being a huge Gibbons and A2 fan. Too snarly, bitey, trebly for me. Stills earching for my bridge pickup....

Re: 59N and Pearly Gates Bridge - Good Combo?

i have it in a 24 3/4 inch magohony iceman, sort of les paul ish guitar.

i think it rocks. maybe cause i dont have the maple top the pgb isnt too bright for me, but i love that pickup. i was thinking of changing out the 59n though

AB'ing those will show how nasty a PG can be! In a good way...

Re: 59N and Pearly Gates Bridge - Good Combo?

the pg neck is a bit more aggressive then the SL neck - i have had both in my LP and
i cannot tell which is better recently I changed to the SLneck
...i am thinking of another LP for good home for PGn.

Always a good reason to get another guitar! I do it just to be able to use certain PU's.

IMHO, one of the best humbucker "mix-n-match" combo's for a Les Paul !!!
The PG(b)/'59(n)
