59N Vs The PGN....What I Hear

"Clicky"...that's a good word for it, with the upper mid spike the pick attack really seems to come out a lot more, and that seems to bother a lot of people!

When I hear a pickup as being to bright or aggressive or hurting my ears, it's that "pick click" thing that is usually what's bugging me.

A little to much "pick click" is what I hear from the JB too and the reason I don't use one in my own guitars, and probably why Seymour uses the JB with 250K pots instead of the usual 500K. 250K pots make a humbucker sound a little to muffled for my tastes, but maybe in a Tele, which is where Seymour uses the JB, 250K might be all right...although I doubt I would like it as I thought the JB sounded muffled when I used one in my Strat with 250K pots.

A little bit of "pick click" (I've also heard it described as "kiss") is fine and helps keep the pickup articulate and whether a pickup has to much or not is a relative thing and totally subjective.

Everyone has thier own threshold of what's "enough" and what's "to much".

Regarding my suggestion to John of the A2Pro, I just figured he was after an uncovered pickup like the PG. If I'd thought John was willing to go for a covered pickup I would have suggested the Seth Lover or Antiquity.

Why not order a Duncan cover from GuitarElectronics.com? Then it won't matter if the pickup you order is covered or uncovered -- you can always grab your spare cover and slap it on.

Cool Bro!

I wonder, wouldn't you say the PGn has more of that a2 (spongy) bass than a 59n? At least thats what I hear. To my ears (in my guitars) PGn sounds like a regular good old a2 bucker with the addition of them uppermids (=texas sizzle :burnout: ).

That's exactly what I heard when I had my PGn in my Epi LP Standard. I completely gutted the electronics in that guitar when I put the SD hummers in, but it still had that "sponginess" dr. barlo wrote about. I replaced it with a 59n and like it better. Could've been the wood used in the body, though, as it's well known that Epi doesn't use the highest quality woods in their guitars. I use a PGb in that axe, tho and it sounds nice with that 59.

This is so true of the PGn. In fact, I was just going to comment that the PGn sounded better with my JB than with my C5. I think that my amp eq fits both pickups much better (they sound more balanced) when I use the JB/PGn combo in my Strat.

So Lew, what pickup should I go with in the neck if I like the PGn in terms of the 'warmth' but not the pick click?

You mean you want something like the PG in the bridge but want less pick click...is that right?

If so, look at a Seth lover...
