59s with Alnico 4 have you done it?

Re: 59s with Alnico 4 have you done it?

very clear pickups like my re-winds and 57-08s get wound up higher and the poles go flush..

pickups that are not so clear ..my wlh set or 57 classics or what have you..get raised poles and set lower in the rings.

Donny, there are guys here that have replaced their mom with an A3, Dad with an A8, and their left and with an a4.

I don't know if I'm going to go in that deep but I'm trying to get my Bernice to sound a Lil more like Bernice. We all know now that 59s had rough A4 and foil bees not A2 and PIO bees. So just dialin her in a bit. The band is getting bigger, Gene Odem came out and did a book signing at our last show.

I got them in and Im really impressed sounds vintage but not fuzzy like an A2, I think its a keeper. :)

Re: 59s with Alnico 4 have you done it?

Today, with modern industrial computerized machines used by several ISO 9001 foundries found all over the world, being the best located in continental China, to make a custom batch of any alnico magnet is a much more simple process: the mass-spectometer analizes the presented sample and can determine with precision the exact alloy, then programs the annealing process so it can match the sample in a molecular level, so it'll replicate the B/H curve and the alloy's exact saturation point and level, without destroying the sample. All specs are saved so it can be used again being the truest to the original specs, ensuring repeatability.

This is simply not true. The formula exists, but it's proprietary; that's why it's not a STANDARD grade contained in the MMPA table. However, even the MMPA recognizes A4 as a viable grade of alnico-based permanent magnet. If you look the presented file in pag. 25, you'll find the specs of A4.

I understand that there's consistency in A4 from one manufacturer to another now, and only mentioned it isn't an official standard formulation because I still sometimes see people trying to argue that it isn't a real designation because of that. It's also true that A4s made to the old 1950s formula do not match the modern formulation. I like A4 myself, use it in several pickups, and agree it can be a big improvement to the 59N for certain guitars. I prefer the 59N with its stock A5 in other guitars.

This is pure speculation.

HTH,

Yes, speculation. I wasn't saying all the A4 Gibson bought in the 50s was substandard A5 being sold at a discount. I was saying that it may often have been, which fits with Gibson's habit of buying the cheapest materials when offered the choice, like when they bought rough mags instead of polished to save money. It might also explain why vintage A4s which Jim from ThroBak analyzed seemed to be under-strength A5s when the test results came back. Jim has said he believes that no actual A4s were ever used in PAFs, only A2s and A5s. Yet the invoices found by Tom Holmes list sales of A4s to Gibson, so I was speculating it's possible they could have been slightly impure A5s being sold off cheaply. That would reconcile the purchase orders with the test results, but please understand I wasn't saying it had to be the case.

Hope that clears my statement up some.

All I know is a set of Duncan 59s with Alnico 4 roughs along with 500k volume pots and 50s wired 715p .022uf orange drops and I got every sound I ever heard Gary Rossington pull off on Bernice his 59.

If I had a set of 59's, I'd go A4/UOA5. Or maybe, per Lt. Kojack , an A4/A8.

Re: 59s with Alnico 4 have you done it?

I put polished a3 & a4 in my Duncan P90 and it now has filling vibrating lows don't care much for it on it's own but when mixed with the P90 3b in the bridge it is an awesome combination. I don't know what this has remotely to do with 59s either I have set of 59s in my es335 and wouldn't change a thing they sound like the guitar was made just for them.

Re: 59s with Alnico 4 have you done it?

I have the 59 stock in the bridge of my other les paul paired with a jazz neck love it. I also have a set in my SG wouldn't change them either. Gibson should consider running Duncan 59s in their USA line they are much better than Gibson pickups.

Re: 59s with Alnico 4 have you done it?

I did it with the neck pickup. It was a very subtle change. A little less treble and bass and a little more midrange. The stock A5 was too boomy in this guitar but the A4 was pretty bland and uninspiring, still too much low end. I currently have the rough A5 from my Whole Lotta Humbucker in the neck now and it's just slightly sweeter than stock but eventually will get replaced.

I also tried A3 in the neck 59, low output and lost a lot of the push that made it sound good in the first place. And an A2 made it really dark and bassy sounding.
