5W Marshall AFD Combo?

Re: 5W Marshall AFD Combo?

Did you read the specs AJ? This amp has quite a bit more going on circuitrywise than the Excelsior..2 channels, more versatile tone stack, .reverb, 2 inputs, selectable wattage and it has a much better quality stock speaker. The Excelsior is a cool amp, but I dont think its a fair comparison. Class5 is a better comparison featurewise.

It's a 5W amp, which means I couldn't gig with it since I use clean tones quite a bit. $700 for a home/practice amp is nuts, IMO.

Fair point on the volume if you need it. But feature wise I dont think there is any comparison (assuming the Marshall will do what is supposed to).

Last year they did the anniversary 1w amps, with very little features on most of them, for similar prices and people complained about not enough value for the dollar. Now they have put out 3 low wattage amps (this, and the new DSL15s) that are far more feature rich for the same prices, sound 1000 times better than the MA and Haze series they replaced, and people still B&M. Cracks me.up.

I see your point, but this is no different than the 1w amps to me. They're all unusable for a typical gig I'd play, so they'd be relegated to home and practice duty. If I was shopping for a "house amp" my budget would be way, way below $700. I'm sure there are some people to which this will be very appealing, but I'm not one of them :laugh2:

Re: 5W Marshall AFD Combo?

SO waitasec, am I understanding all of this right, it´s essentially a 220x preamp with a 5 watt class a power section and a digital reverb? That just might be of some interest to me... But I´m not going to pay 100$ more just because it has Slash`s name on it... I´ll take a look when they hit market.

What strikes me as curious is that IIRC Slash was famous for using 2555 Silver Jubilee heads (which the JCM Slash was a 1:1 copy of), which have a completely different preamp.... Did he switch over sometime in the last few years or did I miss something else? I was never one to watch celebrities gear too closely....

He recorded AFD with the #34 amp (modded) that belonged to a studio or something.. After that, he was a Jubilee guy. IIRC

My thing is that I have yet to find an EL84 amp that sounds like one of the el34 amps
*** WOW!! Read the details Sixstringsamuri put up and it is a EL34 amp!! Cool! ****

Slash never actually recorded any albums with the Silver Jubilee. There are one or two Velvet Revolver songs done with it for clean and layering, and probably bits and pieces here and there but after the AFD head was lost, most of his recorded guitar tones were done on a Frank Levi modded JCM800. The SJ has always been mostly for live work.

Re: 5W Marshall AFD Combo?

The modded JCM 800 he used apparently was also used by George Lynch around the same sort of time too.

Both of them tried to get the amp for themselves.....Lynch tried to buy it from SIR, Slash tried to steal it.
It later 'disappeared' - I think a SIR employee now has the famed amp
