5watt amp through 140watt 2x12 cab

Hi. I'm considering getting an amp head that can go from 20w down to 5w, paired with a recomended 2x12 cab. The description of the 2x12 cab recomended to go with this amp says that it is 140watt.

The 5w feature of the head sounds enticing but the 140w spec on the cab scares me. When running a 5w head through such a cab, is the power amount that corresponds to the volume the head? Cab? Or combo of both?

I plan to run this amp in a small to medium size living room. Do you think it would be fine?


Total newb to halfstacks. Every other amp i've ever own has been a combo. Input appreciated!

Power on the amp is output, power in the cab is handling ability. Think of it like this.

Head can put out 5-20 liters of juice. The cabinet is a container that can hold 140 liters. Make sense?

Gotcha. So a 5w running through a 140w cab remains the vol production level of 5w? Perfect. Thank you.

There are certain speakers that are more efficient and will put out a few more decibels, I believe the Vintage 30 to be one, and others that break up quicker and geared for low wattage like the Greenback. That cab would work but I'd consider trying greenbacks to test out speaker breakup

Not really. Speakers, and speaker efficiency effect volume quite a bit. A 5W amp through a 2X12 will be LOUD. How loud depends on what speakers you have in the 2X12.

Will work fine. Plenty of headroom. Mini-valve amps have enough juice to drive higher wattage speakers sufficiently.

The site i'm ordering that head/cab from says the cab impedance is 8 ohms. I tend to overthink things. Can someone tell me if there will be 2 inputs on the cab (like one for each speaker)? Or should i plan on using a single one of the heads' "1x8ohm" outputs to power both speakers through a single input on the cab?

I'm new at this!

Trying to make sure i'm prepared for when the thing gets here?

Of course, you can dime all the knobs and not worry one bit about hurting the speakers.

IMO for a 5w head you'd be better off getting a 1 x 12 8 Ohm cabinet with a higher quality speaker.
