68 custom silverface deluxe reverberator amplification device thinger

Or whatever it is called...those new silverface "ri" amps...the Deluxe Reverb version.

Me likey...bassman side was mega nice. Could not crank it, but my brother and I hit up the Towson, MD Guitar Center today as I am down here for the holidays. He played while I tweaked. I really dig the bassman side of this amp. The blackface was good, a bit tighter and more...not as classic fenderish... with the Celestion Vtype speaker (which I thought was pretty decent..not fizzy like a 70/80,a bit like a cross between a 75 and a v30). But IMO the bassman side is the star, big meaty, full tone with big bass and clear non-excruciating highs. My bro had also been playing on a 6l6 Blues Deluxe and I think the 6v6 bassman side was as big or bigger sounding at similar volume levels. The Bdeluxe had a bit more of that 6L6 scoop,.a bit more classic fender tone, but I feel the Silverface was the winner of the day (my brother, a rockabilly/classic C&W/gretsch guitar fanatic, preferred the Blues Deluxe)

Check em out if you can. Much more versatile than the standard DRRI, but not as modern/tight as the Supersonic 22. Should be a big seller.

Agree with everything you say here in a BIG way!
I have spent time with this amp twice in local shops and both times they blew me away. The big open cleans on the baseman side are some of the best at medium volumes I have heard. I want to really sit down with one of these amps with my guitar and board soon.

The Reverb is connected to both channels, right? I've been eyeballin this amp, although I haven't seen one in person yet. The concept behind an updated silverface is a good one.

Re: 68 custom silverface deluxe reverberator amplification device thinger

I played a PR and I was suitably impressed. I'd probably go for the DR just because I like a bit more headroom than the PR offers but it sounded killer.

Yep Reverb, and I believe the trem too,Joe. The footswitch was not connected so I could not turn on the trem.

Really fun amp. I could see purchasing it as a platform for the Bogner Blue, and swapping my g12h30 for the V70 tothicken/beef it up even more. But generally I do not like open back cabs for my gainy sounds. No denying it was a neat amp though.

And fwiw, that GC was by far the best I have been in. They had a good selection of quality new and vintage instruments and amps. They had a used silverface super reverbfor a reasonable price that I almost pulled ou the plastic for. They also had a 66 blackface super, and a bunch of old gibson, gretsch, and fender models...even old acoustics..50s, 60s, and 70s. Nice store

Re: 68 custom silverface deluxe reverberator amplification device thinger

I played one in Boulder, and it killed the DRRI and the clean side of the Super Sonic 22. The Custom side is so fat sounding. I wound it up to 6* with an Ibanez semi, and the touch sensitivity was just awesome. You really get to have control of clean to power tube overdrive with picking intensity alone, and the OD was smooooooth. Killer reverb, too.

*The guys at Robb's see me getting set to try an amp, and just shut the door to the amp room. LOL!

There are too many Fender models out there!

Can you provide a link to the exact amp you are talking about?

Re: 68 custom silverface deluxe reverberator amplification device thinger

Cant post links on this NOOK reader Ben, sorry.

Yes it is both the verb and the trem.
The tones are killer and I'm really looking hard at this amp right now. Just happened to see one in a local shop sitting beside the blackface RI a few weeks ago and plugged in just to see what the difference in the 2 was. The Silverface 68 blew me away with the depth and roundness of the tones and made both the blackface and a SS 22 sound puny.

I think the speaker helps alot here too, not just the tone stack. But I agree..I miss the tube rectifier a bit on the DRRI, but given a choice, w/o question I would pick the silverface,.and I have always liked the SS22 too (its a bit more focused/nasally)

Re: 68 custom silverface deluxe reverberator amplification device thinger

Yep that's the one!!
Interesting. I was thinking about getting another Lil Dawg, but may have to try this one out. Lack of external speaker out would be an issue... And possibly the country of manufacture ...

Re: 68 custom silverface deluxe reverberator amplification device thinger

It has an out IIRC Ben. One for the internal speaker, and the other.

I think it is MIM, but not 100%

The silverface has a tube not SS rec!

I stand corrected! Sorry. It definitely is not as spongy as a regular DRRI. I figured it had a SS rectifier, like the Supersonic.

Depending on the tone, this amp may represent a fantastic amount of performance : Dollar, especially if you have a sizable pedal collection ...

Please stop talking about this amp I have serious GAS for one and you guys are not making it easy for me to not push the add to cart button. You are correct in saying this amp takes to pedals very well, especially boost and overdrive. The DR was my first gigging amp, I miss that puppy so much.
