7 string guitar thread

Re: 7 string guitar thread

What does the bass player do in bands like that? I've been curious to try a 7 but more for playing with myself.

Update on the 81-7/707:

They were supposed to get delivered yesterday. Today, I realized I never changed my damn address on Reverb after I moved. This should be fun.

I hate it when that happens.

Well, I suppose it gives me time to get the body routed and find a stereo jack & battery clip. Given my love of the 85 bridge/81 neck, I think I'm gonna put the 707 in the bridge at first.

What kind of amps and what not is everybody using with their 7s (or 8s)? I have a POD XT Live plugged into an old Super Reverb. Haven't tried jamming with anybody with it yet, but it sounds pretty good loud at home.

Re: 7 string guitar thread

I usually run my Schecter through my Randall RH-200 into a 2X12 ported Carvin Cab with a Texas Heat/Swamp Thang combo. That or my Spidervalve through same cab. Or either head through my Carvin 4x12 with 12M-70's. Dialed in right, any of them would be enough to conceivably produce the South Park, Cartman, version of the "Brown Sound".

Re: 7 string guitar thread

For ultra low tunings, I think actives are better. My Schecter has a pair of 81s, and is strung 10-52. Usually in drop C, but sometimes I’ll go down to B. Even with the strings that light, it sounds unbelievably tight..

It makes sense... My problem with my 81-85 set is that I feel like they're thin compared to my JB/59 or even my EMG-HZ equipped guitars and the low tuning might compensate for that and instead of being thin it becomes a tight bottom end. (I know that is not necessarily fortunate to compare actives and passives, but I'm still not a fan of actives. But I want to keep one active equipped guitar around, so I might try the Blackouts)

OFF: I had some fun with my last order too: I got me a set of Holow Points out of curiosity. The good folks at USPS stated on the customs declaration form thet the envelope contains "INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR GUNS"... The thing spent almost a month at the customs office and I bet the name "Hollow Point" didn't help either... :D ON

Fun fact: The first 7 strings (in the late 30's-early 40's) had a high A string instead, and were used by jazz players for chord melody playing.

Re: 7 string guitar thread

Just traded my acoustic for a Legator 7 200-SE 7. Think a cross between a Soloist body, sculpted like an old Ibanez S, 27" 5 piece neck, reverse inline headstock. The seller upgraded the tuners to open gear locking Hipshot, and put a Custom 5 in the bridge. The top is way fancier than I usually go for, Aqua-burst quilted maple on mahogany. Will post some pics tomorrow, but I think I like it.

Planning on dropping a PAF7 in the neck, and maybe the Imperium that was in my RG in the bridge. I want to give the Custom 5 a chance, but with the EMGs in the RG, I know I'm going to be jonesing to hear the Imperium again soon. Also thinking about a Superswitch for the spacey stuff, but maybe just a push/pull tone. Definitely going with a lower value cap and a treble bleed.

Re: 7 string guitar thread

I know that manufacturers are trying to market to the detuned metal crowd, but I do wish that companies offered more 7 strings in some colors other than black and blood red. Ibanez does make a couple in other colors like the blue poplar burl, and neon yellow, but 90% of 7 strings and 95% of 8 strings out there are still black.

Re: 7 string guitar thread

I think that's because 90% of guitarists would never play a 7, and 95% would never play an 8. Look at how well the threads do on here.

That said, there are many, many companies doing exactly what you're asking for. They're not Jackson, Ibanez, Schecter, etc... though.

Wrong forum, 7 stringers probably tend to visit SSO more.

I agree, but non-6 strings are still a niche of a niche. The ones looking for a non-metal themed guitar are an even smaller subset of that. But again, if you look past the mainstream brands, Legator, Agile, Strandberg, Mayonnes, Severersen, Kiesel, and countless others offer tons of variety.

There is are probably more 7 string players out there than your original statistics, of course, everyone that owns a guitar does not actually "play", and of course, 87.3% of all statistics are made up on the spot :15: But there has to be a decent market given the amount of choices, right(?).

I more meant that if I wanted info on 7 strings, this would not be where I would go, at least not first, pretty traditional bunch around these parts when it comes to number of strings (unless more 7/8 stringers start coming out from under the rocks).

Re: 7 string guitar thread

Nah, you're right, and I was exaggerating the stats. The lack of people branching out and trying new stuff is a little frustrating sometimes. Not saying people shouldn't do whatever it is they like, but do we REALLY need more discussion of PAFs and hair metal? :)

Anyway, this Legator is a really fun guitar. The only thing I'm not impressed with is the goofy too narrow nut spacing. Easy fix, and it'll be a monster.

Re: 7 string guitar thread

Nice Legator. hows it play. Really like the looks of those

Re: 7 string guitar thread

Just ripped the stock neck and what turned out to be a Duncan Distortion out, replaced them with the PAF7 and Imperium from my RG. It sounds awesome now. It set up perfectly, and plays very much like a great Ibanez. Once I experiment a little more with string gauges, this could very easily be the one that gets the most time.

So what are you doing with the 7 string Distortion?
