7 string guitars

I'm about to embark on my first seven string adventure. I bought a Jackson JS22-7 for 200 bucks, now just waiting for it to arrive. I read many reviews, and watched many videos on this particular guitar, and have come to the conclusion that this may be the best and cheapest way to enter the world of extended range riffage.
Do any of you have experience with this guitar? What are your thoughts?
I'm not able to play one locally because guitar shops around here don't stock 7 string guitars. I'm guessing that they don't get much attention around here.
However, I do love jackson guitars, and have owned a few. I expect this one to play and feel good.

Re: 7 string guitars

You should check out "Seven String" forum for more info. I'm a member over there but under a different username. They can give you some good advice on what to look for.

Re: 7 string guitars

Well the good news is that it's a 26.5" scale length which helps with tuning. Jackson pickups have always been hit and miss for me, so you may be completely satisfied with them or you may hate them. As far as the neck and such, I find the Jacksons a bit thin for my tastes, but you stated that you like Jacksons, so you may be okay with it.

As far as playing, you can just jump in and start riffing on the low B, but know that utilizing the seven string to it's full potential requires that you also learn to chord with it and how to integrate those notes into your chord structures. At school, I play in the jazz combo with another guitarist, a pianist, a bass player and a drummer. When we play a different song, usually me and Caleb will switch from rhythm to lead or vice versa and we both play sevens. When I switch to rhythm, I use those lower chord voicing so that he can fill up more of the high end of the guitar. Our brains work that we prefer to hear rhythms with lower notes, while melody with higher notes.

Hey johnny, do you happen to know where I can find a good 7 string chord book?

You can also check out YouTube videos on seven string guitars. I bet there are a ton of videos out there just on that type of guitar.

Re: 7 string guitars

I got one of these just before Christmas for much the same reason as you. The singer in my band was selling his, go got it for a good price.

While still getting used to the extra string, and the scale length, the neck is quite comfortable. I believe my singer may have had some fret work done, but I think he said it was pretty good out of the box.

The acoustic tone isn't too bad, the stock pickups aren't too bad, but they are very two dimensional sounding. Maybe a tad muddy in the lower frequencies.

The tuners are crap, and the hard part is that the guitar has a 3x4 headstock layout, so not a lot of options for tuner upgrades. Hipshot do locking tuners, but they aren't a direct fit in terms of the screw placement. I've tried looking, but that's the best I can find.

Overall its a decent guitar for the money. I reckon it's worth the pickup and tuner, maybe nut upgrade, and you'll have a pretty killer guitar.

Re: 7 string guitars

Which is pretty much a glorified bass guitar.

I say to hell with the 7 string and just play the two high strings on the bass.

Winning!!

Except that bass guitars typically don't have the same range as an extended range guitar. Its all about how you use that extended range. If you find that you just want to chug on a low B, then you may as well get a six string that you tune down. But if you're someone who wants to use that extended range to play low tuned riffs, soaring melody lines on the higher strings, and use all the interesting chords in between, then sevens are for you.

Re: 7 string guitars

InbredJunk , I have one I use for Drop C but use the High string for f# ~ I just Invented that tuning for myself to Elaborate more on the Drop for higher licks . Will do a little 2-3 string chording as well. The Ax works pretty cool but I bought it mainly for the Neck , i will be re-dropping it into a maple ( from the property ) body with the Deathbar in Bridge and blaze 7 single in Neck

Check Amazon, but the best thing to do is learn chord theory and build them yourself. For starters, it's another b-string, so you can double the note you would play on the high b string.

Re: 7 string guitars

I've been playing the guitar for a week now. I've had to do a little bit of work on the nut, which is definitely getting replaced. The high b string slot is cut just low enough to sound annoying. The tuner for the d string is screwed up. Gotta turn it nearly a full turn before it catches and does anything, and it has a spot in it where it gets hard to turn. And I had to do some spot leveling under the low b at the 4th fret. It was fretting out. Which I think is very minor work, and I'm glad I have the know how to fix. Most people would send it back because of all of this, which I probably should, but I wont. Other than that, this guitar sounds and plays better than the 200 dollar price tag would suggest. The pickups aren't bad either. The neck, pickups and bridge are lined up well. I really like the guitar, but being me, I can't leave well enough alone. I live for modding cheap guitars, so this one may get the premium treatment as well. I think it's worth it.
