'73 SG - sell it ? upgrade it ? see pix first

Forever I thought this was a '72, but date codes on pots are '73 so I guess thats its actual age.

Custom paint - metallic gray / dark silver
gibson microtune tail from 80's
New frets & nut
New 500K pots & knobs
Original PAF's
plays fine

minuses : cavity routed in body for preamp back in the 80's that was never built or installed, serial number was sanded off during painting, top of peg board is pretty dinged up, peg board had been snapped off back in the 80's but repaired with epoxy ( not wood glue !!! ) and 2 steel pins across the break, its been 100% fine and probably stronger than original now.

I got this at around age 8 and was my first and only electric. However I was never thrilled with playing it, nor did I care for its sound except for a few classic rock sounds. The question is what to do with it. I have no clue what this is worth because of its pluses and minuses. I"m ok selling it but how much ? as a vintage instrument it should fetch $1600-$2K, but with custom paint ?

I will say it sounds better with the microtune tail over the original one by a margin.

The other option I'm considering selling the original PAF's off an putting in benedettos which I really like in a A75 I just upgraded. I could get an easy $500+ for each original pup and its the way I'm leaning right now. in fact I could part out the rest of it and replace with new parts. I"d be pretty far ahead $$$ that way I think vs just selling it as is.... or just leave it as a wall decoration with some old Ibanez Pups to fill the holes.

collective thoughts here ? sell it whole ? upgrade it and pay for those parts by at least selling off the original PAF's with change left over ?

FWIW I sold off the original knobs for $25 and was about to toss out the old pots when I saw then might fetch about $75.

'67-'80 T tops are closer to $500 a set than each, but even that is nuts IMO.

Frankly, the guitar is not worth the cost to restore, but you can't put a price on a good block of wood. The finish is not terrible, and if it sounds good, set it up and rock it.

If you have no interest in saving it, then sadly parting it out will get maximum returns.

the paint is no where near as bad as the hole in the back as far as hurting the value. those pups arent paf's either. paf's were only made till the early 60's. those pups are probably t tops

Re: '73 SG - sell it ? upgrade it ? see pix first

they have PAF sticker on back. even still I'd take $500 for the pair. paint / finish is fine for 30 years old.

Re: '73 SG - sell it ? upgrade it ? see pix first

T-Tops will have a Pat# sticker on them.....is that what you have??

Re: '73 SG - sell it ? upgrade it ? see pix first

paf or pat # sticker? the paint looks fine, its just not factory so that might hurt the vintage value but with that hole in there, the paint is kinda a non-issue. not sure what t-tops go for but as with all things vintage gibson, someone will give you a decent amount of money for them.

no it actually says Patent Applied For. I'd have to pull one out which would take a few min, post pix.

Then they are not original. I wonder what is in there then.

When did you receive the guitar?

Would be funny (to me) if someone had dropped in a set of real PAFs.

Re: '73 SG - sell it ? upgrade it ? see pix first

looks like grey pvc hookup wire so i doubt they are real paf's but if they are that would be sweet! one pup would be worth more than the guitar

Re: '73 SG - sell it ? upgrade it ? see pix first

the original wires weren't in great shape, so I had to trim the ends off and extend with shielded pair.

Those are T Tops.

I have seen some sell for as high as $400-$500 each, but most seem to be in the $150-$250 range.

I would totally be down for a full vintage restoration, but I get my jollies working on that stuff.

Re: '73 SG - sell it ? upgrade it ? see pix first

ok thanks for proper ID of these. not sure what you mean by restoration as stripping and refinishing would be an ugly job. I thought about it for a minute. putting an original tailpiece would be a sound downgrade, and putting back in the original slightly scratchy pots... maybe not. its quite playable right now.

I'm just as inclined if its not got much value as is, to make it playable with sound I like by throwing in a couple SD's of choice. otherwise I don't care for the sound of it.

I think you have a total value of about $1000 there.

Re: '73 SG - sell it ? upgrade it ? see pix first

if you like the way it plays but not the sound, id sell the those pups and get a set of pups you like.

Re: '73 SG - sell it ? upgrade it ? see pix first

Those are T-tops? They look like Tarbacks to me: epoxy filled and no full backing plate. And they came on SGs throughout the 1970s. I love the way they sound but I think they are worth even less than the T-tops would be.

Re: '73 SG - sell it ? upgrade it ? see pix first

^ Yep, tarbacks 100% there.
They do go for some coin....maybe in the range of a mid priced T-top.

Obviously no PAF stickers on the base.....
