78 Custom vs. '59, vs JD, vs. alinico ii

How would one compare the '78 custom to a '59, or JD, or even alnico II....

I was between those 3 pickups, and now I'm curious about the '78 custom shop?

Does anybody have a clip of one? I'm assuming it has higher output?

would it work ok on a Les Paul Classic with a Mahogany body and rosewood fingerboard?

wow..yeah..there is alot of info on that pickup...is this the same pickup that is in Ed's EVH Art Series Charvel Guitar?

so what type of magnet is in it? Is it an Alinico II or V?

From what I read it's not that hot of a pickup? Is it less hot than a '59?

Also, from what i read the tone is similar, maybe more mid frequencies in the '78? is this true??

And can this pickup be coil tapped?

I owned the '78 briefly. It has an open PAF vibe, not very compressed, so in that respect it's similar to a '59. However, since it is Alnico II, it has more mids, and I found it to be a little too piercing (like a JB) in the particular guitar that I had it in. Your results may vary. If you order it with four-conductor wire, I'm sure you can split the coils. That's never been my thing, though. Personally the '78 and I did not get along, after an initial honeymoon period. I was thoroughly satisfied with the Duncan Custom, until last week when I decided to swap it out for the Full Shred in the bridge.

No, the EVH Art series uses a custom wound Fender Pickup. My understanding is that the ´78 is essentially a recreation of the PAF that SD Rewound for EVH in, drumroll please... 1978. IIRC the ´78 IS in the Frankenstein replicas, though, just aged to the end of time and back ;)

It IS in PAF territory as far as the output goes , but Ive never compared it directly to another Pickup so I can´t say how they conmpare in that respect.

You can order it with either 2 or 4 conductor wiring when you place your order, so both yes and no ;)

See, I think the reason the '78 Model had the name changed from EVH (for Evenly Voiced Harmonics) to the '78 Model is because of the Frankenstein replicas. My guess is that they (Fender or Ed or both) wanted the pickup to have his initials (part of the EVH musical products thing) but in order to do that, SD had to give that name up by changing the EVH pickup to the '78 Model. So, I think the one in the Frankenstein is a different pickup altogether.

The '78 is one of those pickups that just make you go, "WOW!" It's got a nice chewy tone to it, very full, balanced, and it cuts through very well. The notes just bloom really well. Even though it is low output, it's got some nice punch to it.

I have an SD EVH (now '78) and absolutely love it. Great PUP in the bridge position.
