78/EVH pup ?

Son Of Monster

and Son of Charlie
I have read mention of a pup called the 78/EVH. Is this the one Fender is putting in the Frankenstein replicas? Or is it something else? Can you get one, or is it a custom shop (you have to know somebody) pup? How do you think it would sound in a semi-hollow body?

Re: 78/EVH pup ?

No, the Frankenstein with Floyd replica pickup is a much fatter wind.

The 78 is about what you find in the hardtail destroyer that VH used for some tracks.

Re: 78/EVH pup ?

... the '78 is is based off an Ibanez Super 70? That Ibby pup had an A8 mag innit. Now if SD was to actually make a Super 70 clone pup (NOT a Crazy/Alt 8) then that'd be something... ;)

Re: 78/EVH pup ?

i dont think the evh is based off a super 70, but im guessing that the custom shop could make you a kick ass super 70 copy.

Re: 78/EVH pup ?

the '78 is supposed to be a replica of the pickup seymour wound for EVH back in that year for his now famous frankenstrat. in the right application it'll get you most of those early VH tones from the songs you hear with floyd rose stuff happening(eruption, DOA, ain't talkin' about love, etc).

you really have to be able to crank an old school plexi type amp to get that type of tone though.

Re: 78/EVH pup ?

I thought Ed used a strat trem for everything on the studio tracks on the first few albums? I recall him saying that he didn't like the floyd for studio use, it was too thin sounding...

But who knows if what Ed said was true or b.s./myth...

Re: 78/EVH pup ?

Of course the first album has a Strat-style trem on it. That's because the Floyd Rose didn't exist yet. Not until 1982-83 at least.

:smack:

The '78 is based off what was put in the Frankenstein back in the day. The EVH is what was wound for the Fender EVH Frankenstein replicas. Two totally different pickups.

The first album, as been discussed a million times, was mostly done with an Ibanez Destroyer with the stock Super 70 pickups. Nothing special.

Another humbucker in a Strat that gets really really close to the tone with the right amp and settings is the Gibson '57 Classic Plus. It's an A2 pickup wound to a little over 9k, vintage style construction. It does the trick really well for me.

Re: 78/EVH pup ?

sorry i meant trem-stuff. he liked the warmer sound yadda yadda yadda i know. all the non-trem stuff was also apparently the ibanez destroyer w/ a super 70 or possibly a mighty mite pickup.

nah i dont think the '57 classic + will be right. I mean it is wound to around 9k, but it has evenly wound coils. The SD '78 has uneven wound coils to give it a chewier sound. I personally think the '57 plus would be too smooth.

I can tell you from experience that it does the trick. My Frankenstrat has one in the bridge right now with a single volume and 6-screw trem. It gets VH tones all day long through my Marshall (which is more key than the pickup) and even through my Vox AD50 when I dial in a right model.

How uneven are the individual coils in the '78? Anybody have any info on the numbers?
