78 Model

Currently I own a Suhr guitar in HSS configuration, 2 V60 LP and an SSV in bridge position.
I'm curious about the Seymour Duncan 78 model, any thoughts about this pickup compared to the Suhr SSV that I am currently using?

I can't compare it to the Suhr pickup as I've never owned it.

Overall it's a great pickup. If you want that wild sort of brown sound then the '78 has it completely. I still have one in a Charvel Superstrat.

To compare them to other offerings, I would say it's not quite as hot as a standard JB but the midrange response allows those pinch harmonics possibly a little more. The clean tones are really nice and snappy and it's a nice pickup to solo with.

Only down side I would suggest is that it NEEDS to be an alder or ash body guitar. It doesn't place nice in mahogany IMO. You also need a decent amount of gain on the amp side of things to get the best out of it.

Personally, I prefer the JB Antiquity model above the '78. To me it sounds way more natural and refined than even a standard JB. I don't actually have JBs installed in my guitars, they're the antiquity versions. I don't even know why they bother making the standard JB anymore.

As for the '78, my verdict is that it's great, but the JB-A is better.

Of course it depends what you want as an end result

Re: 78 Model

To me, the 78 is a really dynamic pickup- very responsive to volume controls, and as a result, it needs a very dynamic amp (ideally, non-master volume, or a modeler if you don't wanna get that loud) to get the best out of it. I haven't tried the Antiquity JB, though, but I personally am not a JB fan, so I don't know if I'd like the Antiquity version.

Re: 78 Model

never tried a '78, but before I had my own custom shop pickup done I seriously considered getting the '78 model. I read a few comments here about the '78 that described it as Pearly Gates with just a bit more output--hope that helps.

Re: 78 Model

Tried a 78' in a koa ESP M-II at a music store. It sounded pretty cool. Moderate output, bright and quite dry sounding with lots of harmonics.
Funny thing is, I didn't know what pickup it was until I got home and googled the specs, but the tone I got from that guitar made me play what few VH riffs I know. It definitely nails that vibe.
