I'm only a seven string player, and I haven't messed with Duncan's in my ERG's yet, but if I wasn't experimenting with BAre Knuckle Pickups or EMG, I'd have a Duncan Distortion in them for sure. It's a very versatile pickup for jazz, metal, shred, blues, whatever. I've had it in my 6ers for years and if it turned out that I hated my other pups, I would have gone back to it, no question. I am looking at acquiring an 8 string at some point and I may just drop a DD in there. My Schecter 7 has a Bare Knuckle Painkiller in it and it sounds very Duncan Distortion like, just a bit less compressed from the scatterwinding.

I'd go with a Pegasus, which to me seems like the most versatile of the bunch. The Black Winter would be 2nd. They can both do clean and varying levels of Distortion. The other pickups mentioned are really just for tons of distortion- I don't think a great cleaner sound was a consideration in their design.

I would agree on the DD based on the name if I hadn't already played it in several different guitars. It's got a very crisp clean sound. And I believe the intention of the A&O set was to be as versatile as possible. It's a more moderate output pickup than the BW for sure.

I currently use Black Winters in my Jackson Broderick. They're OK... I'm not totally in love with them, but so far they're doing the job.

I think my core thing is my favorite 6 stringers are alder/maple construction rather than all mahogany. I used the Custom 7 for a while, but went back to the Black Winters. I didn't notice a huge difference and aesthetically my BW are black/silver bobbins whereas the Custom 7 was black. As there wasn't a huge difference, I went back.
