8-String Pickups

Re: 8-String Pickups

EMG an Duncan I think all have 8 string PUPs but I think there actives oh an the distortion I think can come in 8. I assume if you play 8 strings your playing some type of metal or Prog music?

^^ Guys, before you reply, look who´s asking, and think about why he might be doing so. ;)

Re: 8-String Pickups

I would hope that any 8 string pickup would be engineered for the purpose and not just a 8 string version of a 6 string pickup.

agreed.

I think there are too many 7-string models out there that cannot compare to the 6-strings models they are named after. would be nice to learn from that situation and approach 8-string models from the ground up.

I have both the 6 and 7 string versions of the Dimarzio Evolution. The 6 string version has a brass baseplate and the low midrange is a bit warbly and it's prone to feedback. However the 7 string model has a fiber baseplate and is clearer with no microphonics. Why they went with a fiber baseplate I don't know? However it does have a positive effect on tone.

If you take something like a JB or a 59 that people already have criticisms of, I don't believe a 7 or 8 string version made in exactly the same way will rectify any of those criticisms. The low strings on the JB will still be farty and the 59 will still be woofy.

Re: 8-String Pickups

Since its New Products Seymour Duncan asking, I like pickups with clarity, dynamics, and higher output. Tonally I like lots of upper mids, rich harmonics, a bit less low mids, and deep bass that is present but not overpowering. I play more fusion, jazz, new age.

Re: 8-String Pickups

I don't use an 8 string, but I do use seven strings, and I couldn't agree more with what someone said about having the pup not just be an 8 string version of a 6 string pup. Even my beloved Distortion doesn't completely sound the same in a 6 string as well as a 7 string.

I have to agree, I was surprisingly unsatisfied with the Duncan Custom-7 I put in my Ibanez, too bright and not enough balls, I´m theorizing due to the longer coil and otherwise unchanged specs.... It eventually went so far that I reinstalled the Blaze Hb and sold the Custom, which led to me selling the entire guitar soon after, solely because I couldn´t realistically find a Duncan that would get me where I wanted to go ( 7 string Dimebuckers were at the time a no go and I don´t like the Invader in basswood at all, though in retrospect maybe I should have at least given it a chance) and refuse to be seen with Dimarzio pickups.
