80s are coming back!!

Re: 80s are coming back!!

The 80'a never left my garage at least.

I'm excited! Have fun, drink hard, nasty girls, loud guitars, what the heck is not to love!

Well besides the hairspray, Spandex, keyboards, and eurotrash...that is.

But hey I'm all in for the good part of the 80's !

Re: 80s are coming back!!

I don't want to listen to any band with spandex, ratted up hair, make up, platform shoes, and a whiney singer pouting for the camera.

If I may paraphrase . . . I don't want to watch any band with spandex, ratted up hair, make up, platform shoes, and a whiney singer pouting for the camera, . . . but I don't mind listening to it. Occasionally. :)

Re: 80s are coming back!!

An interested portent. I just started forming an 80's glam metal band.

Coincidence? Mere chance? I think not...

Re: 80s are coming back!!

The neon pointy throwback stuff exists for one reason only: the guys who were teens back then are now at the age where their disposable income has peaked. That's who buys that ****. If you go out in the "wild", where 20-something starving artists are trying to be the next big thing, you won't see any neon ... unless some ultra-hipster is doing it ironically.

Pretty much. I'd like to know where all my old Sunset Strip era gear went. I always thought it would go to the hands of ironic hipsters in their 20's. It's probably all owned by guys 3 years younger than me.
Today, I wouldn't be caught dead with 80's style axes. Amps, maybe. I'd like my two feet of hair again too.
:D

Re: 80s are coming back!!

I got an original 80ies charvel in that lovely pink shade. I prefer that over a reissue anyday ;)

Re: 80s are coming back!!

It took me years to figure out that the 80's wasn't evil. When I started ignoring the hair metal stuff and started focusing on bands like R.E.M., the Smiths, the Replacements and the Police, I found that the 80's did have some great stuff, I just had to go digging for it. You can't negate the impact that GNR had on the scene and Soundgarden started up in the late 80's, too. Guys like Tom Petty kept making hit records and never stopped during that era, either.

Yep, equating 80's to hair metal is like going to Paris and eating at McDonald's.

Re: 80s are coming back!!

At least there were some technical, talented players back in the 80's. (Gilbert, Vai, Satriani, Lynch, Moore, Lee, Eddie, Becker, Howe.. etc) Most of the new stuff I see now is someone flopping their fingers around on open strings like they are playing guitar hero on their X-box. I would welcome a return to some semblance of actual tone instead of this droning harsh metallic chugga chugga chugga stuff.

No offense to new people like Guthrie Govan... who can actually play... really well...
AGREED!!
Was a fun time here is a old photo from 89 with one of the old bands i played with playing in my College lunchroom. We were all Music majors there and I am the guy in Black playing the Silver Showcase Gibson U2.

:D

Kept my old PEARL PINK 90 Carvin X220C and still rock it on stage regularly after all these years.

Those old shredder guitars with the super fast necks and flat boards play circles around almost anything available today!!

Re: 80s are coming back!!

Sounds more like you don't want to look at them from that. You've said nothing about how these hypothetical guys sound.
.
A lot of the music was commercial, generic rock/metal pop. MTV did a lot of damage; the emphasis was on looks and flash, not musical substance. It was a bleak decade compared to the late 1960's.

Re: 80s are coming back!!

If the 80's are coming back in any way at all, it's in the way analog synths, drum machines, big reverb, and pop-y vocal harmonies are being employed in music.

Personally, I'm not hearing or seeing any 80's-style neon pointies + racks + poodle hair + eyeliner in pop music at all. If anything, guitar trends seem to be veering more toward the opposite end of the spectrum: goofy-looking pawn-shop-special guitars and amps. In other words: the gear that poodle-haired spandex dudes wouldn't be caught dead with.

The neon pointy throwback stuff exists for one reason only: the guys who were teens back then are now at the age where their disposable income has peaked. That's who buys that ****. True. Its mostly aimed at the nostalgia crowd.. And except for the disposable income statement, thats me!!!
As far as gear, I think the pawn gear trend that Jack White and Dan Aurbach (sp?) helped launch is fading a bit. Seems like the big trend now is 7 and 8 strings for that redundant chug. But I notice more bands on youtube that are doing 80s metal type of stuff again. found a few bands from other countries that are doing it. I must admit, I was a fan of the peppermint creeps. Too bad about the drummer.

yeah, Id love to know where all the custom painted Kramers, RGs, jacksons and BC richs are holed up and the WALLS of modded JCM800s. Funny, back in those days, I didnt like bands that played LPs and stuff as much. (till the bullet boys) But, now I know how good they sound.. I still love the pointies tho!

Im secure enuff in my masculinity to admit that I still have a pair of snakeskin spandex pants with fishnet sides that I had back in the day for the second band I sang for.. Last time I had them out of the mothballs, I could barely get one leg in them tho..

Re: 80s are coming back!!

I actually hated the glam/hair metal (commerial/cock-rock) stuff that was around back then. As someone who started out with music in the 80's I went from classic metal/Nwobhm (Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, Saxon, Grim Reaper etc) and stuff like the Scorpions, April Wine, UFO, MSG, Accept, Manowar to the more underground stuff at the time (Manilla Road, Cirith Ungol, Mercyful Fate/King Diamond, Slauter Xstroyes, Shok Paris, Rising Force, Vicious Rumors, Phantom, Liege Lord, Fates Warning, Warrior, Warlord, Candlemass, Riot, Chastain, Crimson Glory, Heir Apparent, Lethal, Malice, Running Wild, Helloween and just tons & tons more..) to speed metal/thrash, death metal and beyond..so I guess I've always had a knack for skipping crappy trends...ie glam & cock-rock in the 80's, grunge in the 90's, alt/indie rock or whatever in the 2000's & then the whole metalcore/Djent thing that's on right now.

The truth is stuff like that (underground 80's metal) never went away...so many killer bands popped up even at the height of the whole crappy, talent-free grunge movement in the 90's (Cauldron Born, Domine, Wotan, Twilight...) & then there was the whole euro-power/neoclassical & Dream Theater/prog thing that took off then as well.....

It's too bad that the 80's is only equated with glam and synth-pop bull**** by kids today...there was more actual talent around behind the scenes back then than there ever was before or has been since..

Though I will say the scene right now is pretty awesome..you just need to sift thruogh the -core & djent...so in a sense, nothings changed. You still have the diamonds ..but you have to dig for them :D

There was a time when I shared a rehearsal room with the Bullet Boys. Mick Sweda and I were all into LP's and Strats, while Marq Torien was squarely into Van Halen.....and he could actually tear up some VH on his single pickup VH type guitar. I vividly remember Marq sitting on the stoop outside Lonnie Vencent's garage, playing some good VH licks. I still liked my style and Mick's even more. For some reason, it's a memory that sticks in my head. I was around 17, and he was 22 or 23.

As for the heavier bands, I liked and knew many of them. I used to roadie for Armored Saint, Leatherwolf, and Heretic back when I was a kid hanging around all the guys opening for Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. That was a small period of time in the early 80's. If you know Fender's Ballroom in Long Beach, and the Water's Club in San Pedro, you know what I'm talking about.

Re: 80s are coming back!!

The 80's are not coming back...

There is a SMALL group of guys that, for them the 80's never went away and they are experiencing a tiny bit of exposure right this minute but if you look there are just as many guys doing "retro 90's" stuff as there are 80's.

A few neon coloured shred sticks and a handful of overweight, balding, used to be rock stars touring their greatest hits from 30 years ago is not what I'd call a comeback...

Re: 80s are coming back!!

Well, that's the stuff that was heavily promoted 24/7. As is often the case with music, the good stuff was in the background and missed by the vast majority of the public.

The over-saturation of that stuff is the reason I keep forgetting that the 80s gave birth to the world's greatest band . . . the Pixies!
