80's death metal pickups?

Re: 80's death metal pickups?

If I were you, I'd hold out with the Distortion until you get your new amp...just saying. Your world might change a bit once you get your hands on that 5150! How far off is your birthday?

If you are in a huge hurry, the Super3 and D-Activator X are good choices if you don't want the X2N.

Re: 80's death metal pickups?

Let me just finalize this, i don't want to use the DD anymore not because it's too bright (it's actually not that bright), but because it doesn't sound "EVIL" and "BIG", i just want something with more low end and a bigger sound for heavy rhythms, while still retaining those chunky mids that don't disappear when scooped.

then stop scooping your mids..... a 250k pot will kill some of the highs.

Re: 80's death metal pickups?

June 16:)......would the peavey 5150 be good for those old school metal tones? or should i be looking for another amp?

Re: 80's death metal pickups?

I think u misunderstood... The DD has so much mids that even when i scoop them on my amp, the mids can still clearly be heard which I love...i want another pickup that can do the same but with abit more low end.

Re: 80's death metal pickups?

i think your amp is the problem at this point. the DD is anything BUT mid heavy. it has a lot of low end chunk and highs. i would just wait until you have the new amp before you change pups.

Re: 80's death metal pickups?

I guess ill do that.....but, I don't understand how u can say that the DD is not mid heavy.....I guess it depends on the guitar you put it in. On mine it sounds VERY mid heavy, especially when compared to the stock pickups that came with this guitar.

Re: 80's death metal pickups?

That sounds Awesome!! DD always sounded better downtuned...it's abit thin/harsh on standard tuning

Re: 80's death metal pickups?

i agree. that was wide open with no tone pot or resistor. it got darker when i put a 470k resistor in the circuit.

Re: 80's death metal pickups?

Paf pro is good because ofthe "aw" sound, gives it versatility when yo want to do vai style solos or such to mix up the metal or add a bit of fusion/prog into in, like modern music tends to be with all the genre mixing and hybridizing

Re: 80's death metal pickups?

I feel like you should keep the DD around at least until you play it thru the 5150. I have my 6505+ here with it, and It sounds like just about the greatest thing ever.

Re: 80's death metal pickups?

I use a distortion with a 5150 and it has a huge tight lowend. Seriously man wait till you get the amp

Re: 80's death metal pickups?

Thank you for backing me up, guys!

His amp is clearly the weak point at this time, not the pickup!

And I agree...for metal, the 5150 is pretty incredible.

Re: 80's death metal pickups?

There are many things to consider when talking about which pickup is hotter. Yes, DD sounds like it's hotter pup because of the aggressive middle and treble range. However, X2N puts out a lot more millivolts but sounds more tame because of the even EQ response. It all depends on how you wanna approach the situation.

:)

The DD has more winds, similar mag size, same mag material, and strength. So how can the X2N produce more current considering these factors?

This^ Also, the 5150 has plenty of lows, and can cover a lot of metal ground depending on how you turn those knobs. It's the metal amp IMO.

Where did get the wind readings for both pickups. I'd like to get that too, just for fun.

The ohm reading doesn't give you anything on output except that if it's on the hotter or lower side of output (roughly over or under 10kohms) The EQ reading SD and DM give to their pickups don't tell what they are compared to each other. All SD pickups seem to be scooped mids and DM has only one or two that come even close to that EQ-curve. They most likely use different scales.

IMO, the only way to determine which pup has more output is to play them both.

Btw, the X2N is pretty sick pup. It's not warm or bright but very even. It's the hottest pickup DM makes so I see no reason why DD should even have to be hotter. Both are fine pickups.

I have the X2N-7 on a doubleneck on a 7-string baritone neck.
