'81 Park '78 Marshall

I haven't figured out exactly why the late 70's MV JMP Marshalls aren't a particularly desired commodity, but...

It wasn't the nicest day today, but I was off work and it was nice enough to get some pictures.

Hey XSSIVE,

That's a lovely chunk of Marshall there! Do you ever use it? :)

As you can tell mine's been ridden hard and put away wet!

Re: '81 Park '78 Marshall

At the Marshall Arts page, there's a nice segment about about Jim and a quick history of Marshall. http://www.blamepro.com/mar/jim.htm

From what it says, when Jim signed an exclusive worldwide distribution deal with Rose-Morris, his friend Johnny Jones lost his rights to distribute Marshalls. That is when Jim introduced the Park line of amps for Johnny to distribute as a favor.

What those pics, that shows it perfectly. Just a rebadged Marshall. I'm sure it sounds great too.

Re: '81 Park '78 Marshall

Sweet! I never knew the Park amps were made that late - I always thought they were a plexi-era thing.

I love those JMP MV amps - I've owned two, a 50 and a 100. Bought the 100 new at Manny's in NY and later replanted it into a combo cab with a pair of EVM-12's. I loved that amp.

The JMPs are pretty close if not identical to JCM800's but a lot prettier. And that Park is a really cool variation on the theme. I'm jealous!

gotta be honest with you, i hardly use it anymore. my brother bought it new back in '79 and he used it alot but mostly in house use and the occasional battle of the bands or similar. then when he handed the amp down to me when he moved out...it was my first amp. he also handed down his '79 guild that was my first guitar along with the '79 MXR distortion + pedal (yeah he went on a gear buying spree all in one day so everything is the same year lol). so those three were my main rig from age 13 -15 then i got a new guitar but kept using the amp 'til i was about 19 or 20. once i got the peavey the marshall took a back seat but i still used the cab. then along came the engl powerball and splawn cab and now i hardly touch the marshall since my tone tastes have changed. i'm looking to get a good distortion pedal and a hot plate so i can push it a bit more and get some more gain out of it, then i can use it a bit more.

shreder75...that's a powerball, not a fireball...i love this amp :)

Re: '81 Park '78 Marshall

Don't you dare sell that thing. I'd keep the Distortion+ too. Granted my amp is far from being vintage and may not ever have the value that yours does but I don't plan on parting with it.

Re: '81 Park '78 Marshall

If there was a decent bypass in that Distortion+... I had one of those and I despised it because it was never really "off." But it's effect is a nice distortion.

Re: '81 Park '78 Marshall

actually, my distortion plus is spina modded...so it's even better hehe. but i decided to skip the true bypass. i kinda regret it now but oh well, it's another thing i don't use too often. i rather use my home built "primal scream" modified 808 clone into the marshall or the wylde overdrive. but i found that after owning two amps that do amazing high gain (the peavey and the engl) the marshall just leaves me hunting for more and it can't do it. so i think a g2d morpheus pedal will fix that :) plus it is not a low volume amp at all lol. it doesn't sound full and "good" until your shaking down the house lol. thus why a hot plate should help alot.

So what value is the resistor for the 6550's? I know I"m going to have to change them when I put in my KT88's.

BTW isn't this in the wrong room?

I'll have to get back to you about the resistor values...

Remember "back in the day" there wasn't a dedicated amp forum? (I've been here a few months and I'm saying "back in the day.")

The Park does lower gain stuff better than the Marshall. At higher gain (and higher volume) the Marshall is louder and more 'present.' It also has more 'not super gainy' headroom.

Re: '81 Park '78 Marshall

dammit - you guys have got me gassing for a MV marshall, and I haven't even finished modding my Plexi!!

I'll probably get one of these when I start my amp modding business, the justification of the purchase will be "I need one for research" :laugh2:
