9-strings spotted at NAMM

Re: 9-strings spotted at NAMM

Imagine if these guitars became the standard and a generation of players used them. The 'old' 6 string guitars would probably be considered a joke, thrown in there with 3 string cigar box guitars..

The original guitars were 10 strings - 5 strings doubled. Weirder stuff has happen in the history of our instrument. I am not sure when it all turned but I am pretty sure 6 strings is fairly modern.

Re: 9-strings spotted at NAMM

I guess my biggest beef with the ERG thing is that most of the guys who use them just use the low strings to chug on. Sure its a whole lot of fun, but there's so much you can do with the extra strings. And looking at how those 9-stringers appearances you can tell that they're for those guys.

Compare those guitars to the Tosin Abasi 8-string, and there's a world of differences, both in the guitars and the players. Tosin is the kind of guy who uses the 8-string to its full potential, actually using the extra notes and not just the extra open strings.

Re: 9-strings spotted at NAMM

Having more strings brings access to more individual notes but makes fingering chord shapes increasingly difficult. With parallel fourths tunings, the chord shapes are pretty much going to be the same all across the 'board. Ultimately, this will get monotonous. (Just watch those EMG multi-string pickup demo videos for an example! Zzzzzzzz.)

I subscribe to the Brian Eno notion that imposed limitations foster creative thinking. Hence, six strings is generally enough.

Well I guess my motto of saying "If you can't get it done on a 6 then it's not the instrument it's you". I could maybe see classical and jazz guys making good use of the extended range but like you said how are you gonna grip the chords.

Re: 9-strings spotted at NAMM

Wait, don't buy one!! Next year at NAMM, they're gonna unveil a 9-string with a drum set attached!! And that's not all, the higher end model has an 88-key keyboard and microphone configured in as well!

Re: 9-strings spotted at NAMM

I have to admit, I really like 7 strings, and I think they are the natural extension to the guitar's range:

When money permits in a few months, I fully intend to buy a 7 string for myself, basically just to practice my solo guitar chops on. I can also see the legitimacy to 8 strings guitars, guys like Tosin Abasi really do a lot with 8 string chord voicings and it really opens up the floor for guitar as the solo accompanying instrument in a band (sorry bass players). Think of the good a really great 8 string player could do just accompanying a really good singer, and for the first time the entire rhythm section would be perfectly in sync because it would all stretch from one person.

Right now we're kind of in the 'MORE STRINGS MORE CHUGGA' stage because its not popular enough yet. People haven't really found the other niches for this product:

(The tone on this one is perfection)

And as for why not get a piano.. why do people play saxophone instead of guitar? why play a flute when the pianos range is longer? The guitar has a fundamentally different texture and tone than a piano, even if we made a 14 string guitar which covers the entire range of a piano, it would still sound like a completely differently textured instrument.

Re: 9-strings spotted at NAMM

9 strings? really, ibanez you're late, kahler haded 10 strigns and 10 strings multiscale tremolos with teflon rollers before the 8 string chugers were born, and lace had been making 10 strings alumitone humbuckers and deathbuckers, so there's no really new on this just that Ibbi people may use Internet Explorer and finally knowed about more than 8 strings.....

Re: 9-strings spotted at NAMM

^ The novelty of what companies like Ibanez are doing is bringing those string counts to inexpensive production models.

This is what we should all be doing. (Naturally.)

Re: 9-strings spotted at NAMM

There are a number of talented players using 8 strings for jazz and classical to shred. 7 and 8 strings were probably used in the classical world long before jazz and rock. For a shredder check out Sam Bell.

Re: 9-strings spotted at NAMM

I wouldn't mind a 9 string that had doubled plain strings, but I have no real use for ERGs. The only way I would use one is if I had to switch off between bass and guitar during a song, fortunately I don't need to do that.

Re: 9-strings spotted at NAMM

Just spotted this thread. I used to be a metal player and furthest i went was 7 string and that WAS for the extended range it gave me at the time for lead. I had 2 setups, one with low extra and the other was high extra. I have stop playing metal now for around 2-3 years and on friday will be getting my first 8 string as i saw the potential after trying both a schecter and an esp last year. My main guitar brand is fender and i predominantly play strats. As a prog musician the extra range given by an 8 string allow me the freedom to create even more dynamic sound scapes. And yet as above I have already had the labeling of "metal" thrown at me. Yes its a schecter im buying, yes it has got EMGs on it, i also have schecter 6 string with a floyd. Does this make me a metal guiitarist?? No. I like quality and having tried passives on an 8 string i found them to muddy and the actives to be the punchier option. would i replace the EMGs with seymours? Damn right i would, both my 7s have Seymours

in review - 8 and 9 does not have to equate to "metal", just takes a little out of the box thinking ;)
