Trevor was using Hot Stacks in the 90125 era. There's a video of them live and you can clearly see he has a set of the red ones.

I am 29 years old, so I was about 4-5 when 90125 came out. I think it was the first cassette I had my mom and dad buy for me. About 6 weeks ago I bought it on CD, I had not listened to it for many years, but I forgot how many great songs were on it. I think the guitar sounds on that record were great! The whole group was great on that record. Trevor Rabin is quite the versatile musician.

I love the clean tone he has on "Changes". Hell, I love the tione he gets on the entire song and album. Trevor's such a badass. Plus he's got an awesome voice as well.

I think for getting close to his tone, it's all about pinning the chorus pedal!

That said, the JB Jr. is a good place to start and no routing needed.

I was in 5th grade when I saw YES on the 90125 tour at the Forum in Inglewood, CA (near los angeles). Unbelievable concert - not long ago I purchased the reissue 9012LIVE DVD. It's got a lot of footage of backstage things that weren't included on the original 9012LIVE. The original one had a lot of weird artsy stuff in between, and strange footage from old 50's films and such.

I think I remember seeing a huge Bradshaw style (circa early 80's) switching system that he used at the time. The thing just looks monstrous onstage, but I agree with the other comments about his overall sound and tone - just killer guitar tones and the harmonizer stuff he did on the solo for 'Owner of a lonely heart' was pretty revolutionary for it's time.

If you want to check something out that's neat to hear, get yourself a copy of 90124 on CD - it has a lot of the original demo versions of the songs on 90125. It's funny to hear Trevor Rabin playing owner of a lonely heart on an acoustic and just humming along the melody and some rough lyrics.

+1 on the Hot Stack. I remember clearly he had the old red ones in that axe. I saw that tour in Philly when I was in college.

Come to think of it, I had that same pickup in the bridge position of the one-and-only Strat I ever owned. I liked it pretty well.

Edit: Obviously, that's NOT the pickup in the guitar pictured. That one is a JB Jr., Little 59, or Li'l Screamin' demon.
