A/B switches...

I'm looking to add an A/B (or A/B/Y) switch to my pedal board, to select between either the tuner or the effects chain->amp. Just wondering which one you guys have found to be worth the dough (or that are a steal). I know of the Morley, and I think Boss makes one, but that's all I know of really...

Re: A/B switches...

I've got a Morley A/B/Y that I use with just my TECH21 Trademark 60 & Power Engine 60. I run clean & semi dirty on the TM60 & have a SansAmp PSA-1 running thru the PE60 overdrive/kicked up dirty(normally on the Plexi channel).

It works fne for that...but if you try to use it as an amp switcher(1 guitar into 2 amps)it won't work; nasty ground loop noise. For that, I use a GCX switcher:

It's kind of overkill, but it takes care of all switching duties & I traded for it, so I wasn't out a ton of dough.

But I digress: the Morley should work fine for your use & it's only like $40.00 or so.

Re: A/B switches...

There are only a few choices IMHO. The least expensive (and just as good option) is the Loooper A/B/Y box. They are fully customizable, and the work on them is immaculate. You choose the box color, the led colors and the box operates flawlessly without any grounding issues (like cheaper boxes like the Morley). It's completely true bypass and best of all, it only costs $50-85 depending on the options chosen. The guy was a pleasure to deal with and I wouldn't even trade this for a Lehle switcher.

Re: A/B switches...

The Lehle might be a bit of overkill for switching between a tuner and my regular effects chain, I'm not going to be doing any amp switching. I'll look into the Loooper though...

Thanks guys, keep 'em coming.

Re: A/B switches...

Quick question about the Loooper (I'm browsing their site right now), is it powered by your run-of-the-mill barrel adapter? My pedals are on an MKS Pedal Pad board, so batteries are unnecessary, but it uses the typical Boss/MXR/etc. AC connection...

Re: A/B switches...

Here's the board in question. I'll just be using the A/B first in line to send the guitar to either the Boss TU-2 alone, or the rest of the effects (Route 66->Phaser->DS-1->Wah->Chorus->and soon a Delay) then on to the amp.

Re: A/B switches...

Looopers use a standard Boss type barrel connector. It has extreamly low current draw, since all that your powering is the LEDs.

Re: A/B switches...

Actually I'm probably going to get one without any LEDs on it, I have an email in to the guy right now to see if that option is only available on the unpainted boxes.

Re: A/B switches...

I've got a couple Signal Flex A/B Boxes.
Had em for years..never a moments trouble.

Re: A/B switches...

i use a morley to switch 2 guitars (acoustic and electric) into 1 amp....no problems, and u can use it without a battery if u want (the led's dont work tho) i really like it

Re: A/B switches...

Well, I decided to go with a Loooper A/B unit, it had the features I wanted, plus I could customize it and the price was about the same as other factory units. I went with metallic blue with amber LEDs. I really like the one in the picture, but that finish wasn't selectable so I figure it's a pricier "custom shop" option ;).

Re: A/B switches...

Also of note, David was VERY helpful and quick to respond to emails. Assuming the pedal does what I want it to, I can't see any reason not to recommend him if you're looking for A/B and loop switches. He offers quite a few different units.

Re: A/B switches...

If anyone wants a Morley ABC switcher, PM me. It has no ground loop trouble because it only allows the signal to go to A, B, or C. You can use it to switch between two amps, and send the C to a silent tuner. It won't allow you to combine any channels, tho. Combining amps is where the groundng problems occur.
I don't run multi-amp rigs anymore, so I have no use for it. PM me if you want it cheap.

Re: A/B switches...

Curious what creates the ground issue in the Morley's?

I use one and I never noticed it to be a problem.
