My music teacher at school is leaving and moving to china, he was probably the best teacher i have ever had and the classroom and I have decided to chip in some money to buy him something, I am in charge of buying him the gift, he is a bass player who plays classic rock and jazz stuff and i figured Id buy him a classy looking guitar strap... Keep it under 100$ please.

Re: A classy high end guitar strap?

One of the very top-of-the-line leather strap companies is Moody's, but they tend to be very expensive...as much as $175. They are very special, made from beautiful, soft leathers.

Levy's Leathers has many beautiful leather straps. I especially like their carving leather straps, and I have several of them in the smooth leather. I have the paisley, oak leaf, basket weave, checkerboard, kokopelli, and the geometric lines patterns....and multiples of some. Very classy and elegant. Another favorite is their new Super Soft straps...plain leather, but beautiful colors and soft as a baby's _ _ _ _. I also have several of their Classic Series garment leather padded straps.

Guitar Center carries Franklin Straps. These modestly priced leather straps are an excellent value; moderate cost and excellent quality. Of my 55 guitars, probably 12 or more have Franklin straps. Limited colors.

Italia sells their straps on e-bay. I have one of their straps and it is very nice. They tend to run a little short for me, with my very rotund profile. If he is very tall or very round, he might need an extra-long strap. Most companies will do this as a special order.

And consider a custom strap made by a local artisan. There may be someone in your area that can cut, dye and carve something really special. Another of my favorite straps are those of the various makers. My 1975 D-28 has its original Martin-brand strap...soft and worn.... I also have a couple of very nice Taylor Straps for my Taylors, and a rare Music Man strap...part of the original case candy that came with my new 1978 Sabre II back in the day. Really heavy yet soft leather in a rich dark brown...yum.

I think what you are doing for your teacher is a really, really nice thing. But I also know that straps CAN be a very individual and personal thing. Some of mine were gifts from ex-girlfriends, now fondly remembered. A couple were bought on trips, and never fail to evoke memories of those good times. Such is the power of a leather strap. He'll always remember where it came from and its significance.

Good luck!

Bill

I don't know how tall the guy is, but make sure you get him one that is long enough. I'm about 6'3". I play guitar about waist level, and I keep my straps right around 59" long.

I've never worn one, but I have two Levy's leather straps that I love. They make really good guitar straps.

Ironically, Kirk Hammet of Metallica has had custom guitar straps made for quite some time, and the guy that made them for him started making them available to the public. Google Kirk Hammet Guitar Straps

There's also Jodi Head

I would pay top dollar for a guitar strap that actually fits me lol- I have 2 I was lucky to get- most of the ones at Guitar Center are way too small

I hear you. That's why I recommended the one in my first post above. I love it. It goes all the way to 69". That's way beyond long enough for me.

Re: A classy high end guitar strap?

Either of these two brands would be my choice for a nice strap for a gift under $100: Couch or Souldier. I have straps from both and they're both great. Souldier for "artsier" looks and Couch for the "cool factor". Check them out.

Trust you. :D

That'll be pigskin, presumably?

I just like leather, is all. It's durable, it looks good, and it feels nice. Best of all, it's natural -- the perfect match to a guitar made mainly of wood.
