A couple of Bigsby questions

I want this for my SG but it seems a little pricey, is there anything cheaper (lefty) that will work? Also, are they hard to install? I wire guitars all the time but never do any major body work. Thanks!

when getting a bigsby, get the BEST you can...bigsby are very mild tremolos as is, and cheap one have lots of "slop" in the bar making the travel even less...I would get the real deal.

isn't there a style that only bolts on the edge of the guitar, no holes on top? :scratchch (not that it would be cheaper or anything... but I consider drilling holes in the edge less major than the top

so you wouldn't recommend the Duesenberg Bigsby copies? They are cheaper than Bigsby (in Germany)

never tried one of the Duseneburg bugsbys, so I can't say...

For an SG a genuine Bigsby model B-3 is the way to go.

oh man dont trash your SG to add a imitation bigsby. bigsby trems by nature dont realy add to much but they can sure take alot away from your guitars tone and are hard to keep in tune. keep your guitar the way it is and pick up a real SG bigsby factory installed or a cheap strat to get those cool trem sounds. :beerchug:

All bigsbys will have to attach somewhere on the face of the guitar. The B-3 for flat-topped guitars just requires them all there.

I love my Bigsby on my ES, and tell folks that it is NOT a strat trem. It is for vibrato not dive bombing.

If you do get one, make sure your nut is cut properly. In fact a slight overcut wouldn't hurt either. To get your bigsby set up properly you need to have lots of patience and a little time. It takes some tinkering. When I change strings I put a drop of silicone lubricant on my nut slots and saddles. In addition to that about once a year I put silicone lubricant onto a q-tip and and apply it to the bar joint. Then I move it back and forth to work it in. The ball bearing housing is not sealed so when you apply the silicone to the outside face make sure you have a go over it frequently as you move the bare to work it in.

After all of that your bigsby should stay in tune with the best strat trem, or (in my case) as good as a TOM.

Not true, most definitely not true!

Also, I think that LukeDuke is correct. Bigsbys are for subtle vibrato effects. IMO nothing, not even a Strat trem gives you a more gorgeous subtle vibrato.

agreed with all of the above

but yeah, the actual bigsbys, not the liscenced ones, shouldn't bolt onto the body, its the whole tension bar thing. Then again, an SG has a really thin small body, so i dunno if i'd reccomend getting one

maybe you'd be better off with like the kind thats on the angus young sg. I wouldn't want you to snap that thing in half!

Strat trems are WAY to sloppy for subtle vibrato, IMHO. You just can't get good semi-tone pitch variations, you either have too much.....or WAY too much.
