A couple questions about my new PRS's tuning stability

Hi again everyone. I have a couple quick questions I wanted to run by you. I just bought a new PRS Custom 24 with a tremolo and I love it! I've had a couple slight issues with tuning stability after using the trem (and I'm not talking dive-bombs here or anything major) and I was wondering if someone could help me figure out what I need to do to correct this.

1. After using the trem to drop notes even about one full step (sometimes less), some strings (G, B, high E) are returning a bit flat on my Peterson Strobostomp. Nothing huge, but enough that you can definately tell that tuning is off. Conversely, if I pull notes up a 1/2 step or more I find those same strings returning a little sharp. The low E and A are usually fine and usually don't have a problem with the D either. After giving the arm a little shake, things usually fall back into place, but I can't see myself doing that after each time I use the trem. Again, I'm not doing anything crazy with the trem, just a step or so in either direction.

2. I'll have my guitar perfectly in tune and after I insert the arm the strings go a bit sharp. What's that about?

The trem seems to be set up properly. PRS recommends that the bridge float 1/16" off the body. It is at that clearance, give or take a hair, with the right side appearing ever so slightly lower (if it even is, it definately is not off by more than 1/32"). Is that a problem I can fix by adjusting the trem springs or does it have to do w/ the 6 screws? Action is perfect at just over 2/32" at the 12th fret, maybe 3/32". I changed strings once to D'Addario but kept the same guage on it. I gave the strings a fairly thorough stretching. I don't think the strings are catching in the nut. Does this sound like a trem issue? A nut issue? If I'm leaving out any important info let me know. I don't expect this trem to perform like a Floyd, but for what I'm using it for it should stay in tune. Thanks ahead of time!

I'm no expert, but it sounds like a nut thing to me. You said it isn't binding at the nut but maybe you can polish the slots out with a string and some rubbing compound or something. Or try the graphite trick. I hope that would take care of it - that is a cheap fix. Other than that it sounds like a perfect setup. Maybe the different brand of strings are ever so slightly fatter.

Re: A couple questions about my new PRS's tuning stability

I took another look in the trem cavity and after getting my ruler out I noticed that one side of the claw was about 1mm out of sync with the other. I didn't know if fixing this 1mm discrepancy would make a difference in my tuning stability problem, but I gave it a shot. It definately did help. I'm not experiencing the same problem as I mentioned earlier, just a slight flattening of pitch after some bar use, but barely noticeable. In fact, I couldn't even tell - the sensitive strobe tuner told me. So, it looks like things are all good for now! I really love this guitar! Spent all day playing it.
