A custom 5 based trembucker.

Hello guy's.
I would like to order a new pup for my guitar.
(mahogany body, maple top and one piece maple neck with rosewood fingerboard.

At this moment I play a custom 5 trembucker.
I love it because I love this little scooped tone that works great with my marshall El 34 100/100 Amp.

So I would like to get a trembucker with the base of my custom 5 pup.
The only thing I wanted more is more fluety sound, more fluidity and harmonics.

What would you order(hybrid pup)?

Well, to me, fluidity and harmonics are 2 different things. The Hybrid may do it, but I'd almost think of an A2 based pickup for this.

I'm not sure you're going to keep a scooped midrange and get a flutey sound. Try putting an alnico 2 or unoriented alnico 5 magnet into the Custom

Using an A2 magnet with turn it into the Custom Custom.

Custom Shop will create the pickup the OP wants, definitely.

PATB-1b Parallel Axis Original Trembucker sounds like it might be close to what you want. It's similar in EQ to the Custom 5, with extended harmonics. Hotter and more sustain.

Leads just sing on it, and it's very flexible, especially with an already midrangy guitar and amp.

Unoriented A5 might be a good option, to not pump the mids where you don't want, but pull the presence back a hair, and give a bit softer attack similar to A2, it also being unoriented.

Flutey often means midrange-focused, for guitar tones. Getting the harmonics without nasty presence can be a trick. If you just want screaming harmonics, something like the JB can work, but that may be too much upper mids and mids in general for you. JB with A2 is pretty good at flutey, and smooths the upper mids a bit. But there is no scoop at all.

You might find it easier to use an EQ for scoop (a parametric mid-cut with adjustable Q is amazing for tuning midcut), and focus on getting the rest out of the pickup.

Maybe UOA5 in a PATB-1b?

Instead of the JB, maybe a Perpetual Burn? Still hot enough with plenty of mids, yet not so nasal.

The base of my sound have to be a custom 5 voicing.
I love this humbucker.
Someone give me the advice to Make a custom 5/ JB hybrid. After speaking with MJ she made Ma a custom five + (her name for it).
It was the Custom 5 slug coil with JB screw coil.... But with heavy formvar insulation an the JB coil.
But the pickup was made in association with alnico 8 magnet.... (to soften up the mids of the JB I suppose.)
The problem is that this pup is to round.... To fat.... To dark.
Yes for sure, the harmonics sounds good.... But it's no more the Custom 5 character I've been searching for.

Then, with alnico 5bar I suppose that I get the horor high mids of the JB?

I got the JB by the past.... But the high mids were very noosy. I hate them.

I love the clarity of the Custom 5., a great rhythm pickup.
What I've Been searching for is the same but with more ability to scream.


Perhaps I'll better tell you the music I listen.
Blues and metal..... With drop C tuning.
(shadows fall, black label society, lamb of god, Pantera etc....)

The Custom/JB to me sounds like a pickup that I would LOVE!

i would put an a5 magnet in the custom/jb pup. i dont think youll get the mids of the jb that some people dont like. try and it see what you think. the a8 is usually a fat sounding strong magnet so not surprised it sounds too fat or round

that'sy only fear..... Getting this awfull high mids of the jb....
I would really keep that feeling of the Custom 5...and it's little scooped sound.

the a8 is usually a fat sounding strong magnet so not surprised it sounds too fat or round

What Other coil/magnet combination could suits good for me?

its easy to try and a new magnet should be cheap, in the us you can get them for $5 or less. or borrow it from you current custom 5 and give it a try. it wont sound like a jb, youll still have a strong bottom, youll have a bit more output than the c5 but less than with the a8 in there.

I can not follow you. What pup are you talking about? From the custom5 / jb hybrid with a8 I have?

Yes exactly.
And you mean putting out the A5 magnet from my custom 5 to insert in the hybrid will be the solution?

(and the A8 in the custom will be a custom 8? Am I right)

Do you think I get the high mids of the jb?

It could be interesting.... Scooped mids of c5 paired with the jb......

Anyway.... To boomy and fat with th a8.
And you're right by your description of the a8 tonality.

At some point you just need to nbite the bullet and try it.
Magnets are cheap and easy to change.
