A Dimarzio question for the experts

Re: A Dimarzio question for the experts

I am tempted to recommend the super 3, and the evo neck. The super 3 is not as dark as its claim to be and has a pretty nasty crunch to it. If you don't mind a significantly weaker neck pickup, the HFH is usually pretty good. The imperium neck might be one to look at as well.

Re: A Dimarzio question for the experts

I picked the Bluesbucker because it has a P90 thing going on.

The AT-1 because it's designed for a guy who used to use a JB. It's not too hot and is mellow on the high end.

It is desinged after a modded jb - apparently Andy's was a bit different than the standard fare. The AT1 Might be a good choice though, it's a bit fatter and not as spiky as a jb. For the record I think both the guitar players in skid row used jb's and mostly Rivera m100's on the slave album.

A Dimarzio question for the experts

Ok....I've watched dozens of YouTube vids....
I think I'm leaning toward a Super Distortion bridge...
I'm still unsure on the neck.
I think a lower output, more vintage direction is what I'm looking for.
It's between the PAF Pro, PAF Master or the PAF 36th anniversary...
I'm still thinking about the p90 in a humbucker thing too...too many damn choices.
Thoughts?
Looking for a rounded high end and deep "Strat-y" lows yet still have a soft attack if that makes sense.
The Quickrod's clean channel is pretty powerful so that's why I'm thinking a softer attack.

I think I have decided...
Super Distortion dp100-bridge
36th anniversary dp103-neck

Any reason why this might not be a good match??

Both good choices and worth a try. I think the 36th might be a little bigger on the lowend than your looking for, but try it. The paf master might be another option or the HFH. To me, the HFH matches exactly what your describing, but again it could just st be me.

Re: A Dimarzio question for the experts

The thing steering me away from the HFH is the exaggerated treble response...In a Quickrod that's the last thing I need. That a bright amp to begin with.

You might want to rethink the DP100 then.

According to Dimarzio's webpage the SD treble rating is 5.5
The Gravity storm is 4.5 (this is what is currently in the guitar),
So they are close, no? Do you feel that the SD is too trebly?
I don't hate the GS but I feel like it is just ok...
The Titan in the neck however is terrible...way too thin and powerful. I'm having problems getting it clean enough. I've lowered down to where it's almost level with the pickup ring! Even though it sounds pretty good under gain, It's not for me at all.

Maybe a Norton and and a PAF pro or 36th anniversary.

I wouldn't really take the tone chart on Dimarzio's page too seriously. The dp100 is actually a pretty bright pickup, it's just not the same type of bright as say a Duncan distortion. Its one of the reasons I recommended the super 3 instead.

The super 3 looks pretty good too actually.

Re: A Dimarzio question for the experts

I would have suggested a JB or At-1 for those tones as well, but NOT in a Les Paul. The Air Norton always sounds like pure mud to me, especially in short scale necks. The Paf Pro and Duncan 59 can be boomy in a Les Paul neck. The Paf Joe is a great vintage/modern take on a PAF, and does not have too much bottom end for a Les Paul. It pairs well with an Air Zone.

I was looking at the regular Norton...not the air version.
The air zone however looks promising.
