A Dimarzio question for the experts

Re: A Dimarzio question for the experts

Put the Titan Neck in the bride spot while you still have it.

...you will discover a different group of choices to fret over.

For the neck go with a PAF Joe (PAF-ish), Bluesbucker (P90-ish), or HFH (single-coil-ish).

The LiquiFire is also one of the finest neck pickups made. You kinda need to pair it with a high-output bridge, though. I wasn't that happy over the sound of it in the bridge, however, but other guys seem to like it there.

FWIW, I will gladly take a 59 or PG in the neck spot of an LP over a Jazz. I don't even really like the Jazz that much. Why? Because I like to shred. It's great for cleans though! My favorite Duncan for high gain is the Full Shred; cleans aren't all that stellar.

The liquifire looks like a good choice too!
If I get a chance I might try the Titan in the bridge....if I'm being honest I'm feeling pretty lazy about it.

Re: A Dimarzio question for the experts

PS: I'm not above running a 47-nan cap or HF-shelf* in series with my neck pickup.

(*) A version of an HF-shelf is called "Artie's Anti-mud Mod" in the SDUGF bubble.

Re: A Dimarzio question for the experts

Lol....I actually watched a bunch of vids just now on it. I can definitely hear the upper sparkle in it...it's not what I'm looking for. Overall I'm looking for something a little darker on the top end.
Thanks though!
Then PAF Joe or Bluesbucker if you take my advice and go for a medium output DiMarzio.

if I'm being honest I'm feeling pretty lazy about it.
I'd hate to see you squander a perfect opportunity. :(

Seriously though, even if you don't like it, it can give you a bigger perspective on what to try; and *hopefully* provide at least some reference for the published BMT figures for your particular guitar.

Yes, I'm actually really liking what you've suggested for me, so thanks for that.
I like the PAF Joe, Bluesbucker, PAF Master and I still am liking the 36th.
As far as a bridge pup, I'm definitely going for less output but don't mind a little push. But I think the Gravity Storm is just a bit too hot...I'm still up on the air with a bridge pup. I even like the SD though it sure isn't medium output.

Ill try swapping the Titan, hopefully tomorrow night after work. After all it's wired up to the harness of the gibson PCB board...and I guess I'm not THAT lazy. Lol

Re: A Dimarzio question for the experts

Just to get an idea of what a medium-output DMZ neck pickup could sound/feel like.

The Gravity Storm Neck or Dark Matter 2 Neck in the bridge (sans the silly cover) could be just the ticket. The AT-1 is a just a tweak on a The Breed Neck which is a great bridge pickup in longer-scale bolt-ons.

I'd toss the stupid harness, myself. I'd also look into running a push-pulls to alter the voicings of your bridge and neck pickups, or make use of the fact that there are 4 pots at your disposal (spin-a-split, PTB, sacrificing a volume and/or a tone control).

Mr. B also suggested rotating DMZ pickups which is also advice that is golden.

Re: A Dimarzio question for the experts

The harness is as good as gone. Currently the harness allows coil splitting, in/out of phase and ....something else idk.
Any way I'll yank it and put in high quality pots with 2 push/pull for coil splitting. I have no need for in/out of phase whatsoever.

Re: A Dimarzio question for the experts

Spin-a-split, at least temporarily to see if there's a fixed partial split value to use with a push/pull could be well worthwhile. Parallel could be cool too depending on the pickup and what you'd like in addition to or instead of splitting.

You probably don't need to worry about rotation unless the pickup has the 4,501,185 patent. It's possible for "Air" and/or "Virtual Vintage" tech to be applied differently for each coil, however.

The top 3 I would recommend for you then in that guitar are

Evolution neck
Dominion neck
Paf pro neck.

The other options were great too. Try them all

The Evo neck sounds fantastic! I think it's a little too hot for my needs but the clean tone is damn near exactly what I'm looking for. Nice and thick/fat without too much bite yet still has a roundness to it.
Same when it's under gain, fat and round.

It's not really. It's as hot as any of their other medium fare like the paf pro, or the air norton

Re: A Dimarzio question for the experts

Ok...so I have to admit something...
I screwed up the wiring on the Titan. Somehow I seem to have wired it either in split or parallel or something. Once I pulled the push/pull to the out position it fattened right up. Still, it's not quite the tone I'm going for.

Re: A Dimarzio question for the experts

I like high gain pups - but because of the crispness and immediacy of ceramic. And I use less gain than you would think from the amp.

Yep, this weekend I used a guitar with a Duncan Distortion bridge and my crunch channel gain cranked BUT the guitar volume was around 4 or 5 to play rhythm, that sounds crunchy enough. Volume to 10 just for the solo. Keep it simple but works great.

Re: A Dimarzio question for the experts

Ok....I contacted Dimarzio and set up the return of the current pickups. (Gravity Storm bridge/Titan Neck).
I pulled them out of my Lester tonight after work and boxed them up for shipment tomorrow.
I decided on a Super Distortion for the bridge
And a PAF 36th Anny for the neck.
I watched some YouTube vids with that combo and they really sounded killer.
I even ran across a vid from the guitar player in Robin Thicke's band using that combo.....I mean, if that's not the best endorsement around, I don't know what is....
