A DIY Dumble Clone Demo: DLT Amplification Pumble

Re: A DIY Dumble Clone Demo: DLT Amplification Pumble

Hi Chip,

Am very glad to hear your thoughts. Really... In fact, got the new one (now thats mine), the white one so to say, today. And hearing those makes my day...

:)

I couldn't play with it that long. Just checked whether or not its working. It does, and sounds great. Anyways, I'll record something quite soon, if you guys are interested. But the first impressions were great, and the "resonance" is sooo right for this amp... Anyways, I will be giving the details later.

Best,

B

Re: A DIY Dumble Clone Demo: DLT Amplification Pumble

Doc - thanks so much for a very thorough response!

That is a VERY cool amp, and I am fascinated by the layout. The mix of solid state relays, turret board, and point-to-point construction (IOW mounting components directly on pots, tube sockets, etc.) shows that your friend really knows what he's doing. That mondo bridge rectifier is unusual too but I'm sure he's got good reasons for using it.

Most amateur and semi-professional amp builders either start with a "known good" layout or else they end up with a jungle, cross talk & noise. Having built 4 amps, each with at least a semi-custom layout, I really appreciate all of the careful planning that went into this layout. It's especially hard with a higher gain preamp like Dumbles. Wedging reverb in there without problems is icing on the cake. (Reverb tends to pick up and/or create all kinds of noise and oscillation.)

I confess I didn't pay much attention to the tube complement when I watched the video before. Using 5751 tubes for the preamp and KT-77s for power tubes isn't typical to say the least. Was it designed around 5751s or was that your choice Doc?

The amp shown in the demo is not the same one as shown above - all F&T filter caps and Orange Drops in the demo amp and a few things are relocated. Is the one you showed pics of above the prototype?

The tone through the ODS channel with the Strat neck and MV up high (starting about 6:40) is still my favorite part of the demo. It's a little more raw, more rock 'n roll, than most Dumble clones I've heard and I like it.

Thanks so much for sharing all this with us!

Cheers,

Chip

Regarding the gut pics:

The gut pics that I posted above is not from the one in the demo. That is his amp. The new, white one, is mine (which arrived today) and the gut pics were from this new one.

If you are interested, the gut pics of the one in the demo are here:

I have known this guy, Turkay, for more than 7 8 years. He's younger than me, and a very friendly guy. He's been into amps for quite a while, and is one of those who reads a lot and devotes all his spare time to check schematics, fish out the key points of every schematic from various amps. He is not into the high gain thing himself, but quite a talented guy. The new one he has finished for me is his 8th (2 1974 TMBs, 1 1974 Lite, 1 50W 1987 PA with Randy Rhodes mod -my other amp :D - an 18W (Hammond 125E) amp with 2203 type pre and power stages -2 6V6s-, and these 2 D type amps). It is basically a one man show, and I hope he continues.

By the way, I can also give the links of another clip with the black D amp, the one in the demo:

Dr. Barlo on some jamtrack with the black D-amp

I have used my 90 strat and this black D amp (ODS channel, with light drive), the one in the demo. In the second loop, I am hitting a clean boost pedal, and in the third my wah. The stuff after ~1:58 is done with my Les Paul and Turkay's 1974 TMB. The mic is off axis, Shure Beta 57, and I have used EMU 1616m (and its effects, reverb and delay that is).

Best,

Re: A DIY Dumble Clone Demo: DLT Amplification Pumble

Using this amp (mine, the new and white one) I have recorded some stuff over some backtracks.

So the amp is my D clone, which we called (for the heck of it) DLT Rumble (reverb thingy... :) ), and in both of the recordings the reverb is only from the amp. No eq stuff, no reverb or delay.

I have recorded both with 2 mics, a Beta 57 (off axis) and SM57 (on axis), and put them on all the way to left and right channels. To me getting them out of phase in Cubase sounded better, and that's what I did.

Both are recorded with this guitar:

(The bridge is a Hamel STD-A, middle Fender Tx Special, neck Antiquity HB with its stock mag)

I have used the neck pickup (antiquity HB) in the first clip:

http://barlo.gitarpedal.net/GP-Cem/GPJazzFunkCem-1/GPJazzFunkCem-1-DrBarlo.mp3

Halfway through the clip, I am using the clean channel (with my Barber Tone Press), then the ODS thing + its boost (and a Lovepedal Eternity set with 0 drive and full output)... The switch is on the fly, so I did not stop and change the eq or something.

In the second, I have used the bridge pickup only:

Am also using a Barber B Custom Cool, almost 0 drive but full output.

Tell me what you think. Hope you like my crappy playing...

Re: A DIY Dumble Clone Demo: DLT Amplification Pumble

Am loving my amp more and more each day. Just wanted to share some pics and vids that I have done:

Am using my Duncan antiquity neck HB in this one... In the following, I am using the same guitar but the bridge, Hamel STD-A...

And using a Mesa V-Twin as its preamp, the thing sounds as follows as a power amp... The pickup is a PATB-3 in the next one...

Yesteday, I did some recording on a backtrack with this amp (the white one) and my PRS McCarty (bridge position, Duncan Brobucker). It's all the amp all the way through half of the clip. Then I am stepping on my chorus (AnalogMan). Recorded with SM57 (off axis) and EMU1616m soundcard. The effects are from the soundcard (EMU PatchMix DSP).

Appreciate your comments.

Re: A DIY Dumble Clone Demo: DLT Amplification Pumble

There is nothing wrong with any of those clips. Playing and tone are both great. Can you describe your recording chain (I did not read every word on every post above)?

It's great when you get an amp that just CLICKS with your natural tone and playing style!

Re: A DIY Dumble Clone Demo: DLT Amplification Pumble

Thanks.

The recording chain is: Guitar (either my tele or my PRS) into this pedal board of mine into the amp. From the amp into the cab of my blues jr. which has a Celestion G12H30. The mic is an SM57 and the soundcard EMU1616m. In some of those clips, I have used the effects from my soundcard (EMU PatchMix). And Cubase.

If you wanna learn more specifics, just let me know.

Re: A DIY Dumble Clone Demo: DLT Amplification Pumble

Im I correct in reading that the second batch of clips posted with the guitar are from the Second amp right?
Great info in the threads.

Ill check the clips when I can. I cant wait.. The amps look awesome! Tidy and I love the colored tubes.. (petty I know) Anyhow, I would LOVE to be able to create something like that.

Cool looking axe too!

Re: A DIY Dumble Clone Demo: DLT Amplification Pumble

Maybe I should have made another thread...

You are correct. Nevertheless, sorry for the confusing bulk of info, Bloodrose.

Everything after the 25th post is done with the second, WHITE/CREAM amp. In fact, that particular one is mine, which I got after starting this thread.

Please be my guest and check them out. Would love to hear what you think.

Re: A DIY Dumble Clone Demo: DLT Amplification Pumble

Hi Barlo
What reverb schematic, transformer and tank you used in your clone?
Thanks
Duka

Hi,

The reverb tank is a type 9 Accutronics (pre Belton) tank with medium decay. 12AT7 driven, and basically the schematic is the one at Brown Note, the retrofit for the D'Lite.

Hope this helps. If you have further questions, please shoot.

:)
