i saw a 1984 "Pre-Historic" Gibson Les Paul Reissue for sale and is only $300, i was wondering if any one new anything about this kinda guitar? cuase im curious why its that cheap

Re: a gibson i saw

I don't know much about that model of guitar, but if it's a true-blue USA Gibson for $300, I'd buy it.

Re: a gibson i saw

It used to be that Gibson didn't have a Historic Division to put out their RI's, I beleive that they just came out of the Custom Shop.

Are you sure it is genuine and not a very clever copy that has been put together? Do you have the serial number or other identification marks - then go and check Gibsons site as to the validity of the guitar and the serial number (see below). If at all checks out and it is only $300 then go for it. If there is any doubt then don't touch it with a barge poll!!

Yeah be very careful dude, there are a lot of people around these days doing a lot of sneaky mongrel things to make a few dollars...one of which is probably frauding expensive sought after stuff like nice guitars!

Re: a gibson i saw

"Pre-Historics" generally refers to certain LPs made between '83 and '89. They were yet another in a long line of attempts (dating back to the '70s) by Gibson to make a LP that was like the original bursts made from '58-'60. They were not up to spec (top carve, pup routes, knob placement, etc), but many are fine sounding guitars nevertheless. Many have exceptional tops. Some I have seen didn't have finishes that I liked that much, but that's just one man's opinion. $300 sounds way, way off. Warren Haynes has played a pre-historic LP for a long time. If memory serves me...it's an '84.

Actually the historic line is part of the custom shop. Pre-historics reissues are the inacurate reissues Gibson made before they had a custom shop, which wasn't until 1993.

and $300 is waaay cheap.
