A good combination of duncans for 80's rock

Hey, for a strat, what combination of seymour duncan pickups in the neck/middle and bridge position would give me a heavy rock sound or 80's metal sound such as maiden, skid row, poison, metallica etc....probably the hot rails at the bridge, but what would go good in then neck and middle position for that. What would be good for metal guitar solos in the neck position? thanks

Re: A good combination of duncans for 80's rock

Well... i'd recommend having a JBjr in the brigde position, a hot rails in the neck, and if you need something for the middle slot, a vintage rails, which is much lower output and will do clean sounds very well.

Re: A good combination of duncans for 80's rock

I would go Cool Rails in the Neck & Middle... maybe even for the Bridge as well... the Cool Rails are EXCELLENT pickups!

Re: A good combination of duncans for 80's rock

Id actually recommend a JBJr for the bridge definitely, probably a cool rails for the middle unless you want to get more stratty tones for cleans, in which case get either a duckbucker or vintage rails (both effectively the same pickup anyway, pick which ones you like the look of better!) for the middle, and then a cool rails for the neck should give you great fat singing neck tones!

Re: A good combination of duncans for 80's rock

I've tried the single-sized humbuckers (both the 59er and the JBjr) and I can categorically say that they simply don't compare to their big brothers. You can't get the sound of a humbucker out of something that sits in a single coil space.

I highly recommend going HSS with your pickguard and then going from there....

Re: A good combination of duncans for 80's rock

I personally cant tell a huge amount of difference between the tone and output of the Single buckers and the full sized buckers. I personally would go with 3 cool rails and call it a day!

Re: A good combination of duncans for 80's rock

yup! Cool rails in the neck should do well for that!

Re: A good combination of duncans for 80's rock

I don't have much experience with single sized humbuckers but when I had a strat, a Hot Rails Bridge did it for me.

I liked the single coils for neck and middle but that was just my personal preference...judging by the bands you listed we have similar musical interests so I thought I would give this 2 cents of mine.

+1 That's exactly what I use. It can even branch into other genres.

Re: A good combination of duncans for 80's rock

So with hot rails at the bridge, would i be better off with a hot rail at the neck as well or a cool rail at the neck for metal?

Re: A good combination of duncans for 80's rock

A lot of it is preference, but I'd probably go with the cool rails at the neck. It's a little lower output (as the name suggests) so it's more suitable, IMO, for other styles of music.

Re: A good combination of duncans for 80's rock

If you want versatility, you could put Cool Rails in the Neck and Middle, with a Hot Rails in the bridge.

Seeing as you did mention Iron Maiden as one of the bands you like, you could go with Hot Rails in all three positions; I have no experience with their versatility, but I imagine you wouldn't have much.
