a good noise gate for a strat

always SD

hi

i look for a good noise gate too

MXR
Tc electronic (a new one)
ISP decimator II and G string
EHX a new one : the silencer
Mooer : noise killer

iSP is very expensive
i saw a video and the sound was better with ISP than EHX Silencer
but i don't know

Re: a good noise gate for a strat

I picked up a Boss and I'm having good luck so far. Relatively cheap used.

Re: a good noise gate for a strat

If you want to remove hum from your single coils then this one -> http://www.ehx.com/products/hum-debugger

If you want a gate then there is the tc nova dynamics which has dual gates & compressors, it's discontinued but can be had for cheap used. Rest options you've already listed earlier.

Re: a good noise gate for a strat

yes, i don't like single coils with hum (and with my amp too, but it's another problem )

You should try out the hum debugger then, i didn't notice it doing anything effective with humbuckers since they already cancel hum. The nova dynamics does have more control than the basic noise gates which will also work on amps but it's rare to find used i guess.

Re: a good noise gate for a strat

ok
but i have read some bad comments (it's not a noise gate)
and i would like to try the new pedals with a lof of functions

Re: a good noise gate for a strat

ISP is great as I have the G-String ii but you also have to clarify how you use your volume knob, and how much gain you use. If you stay on the "lead" channel of your amp and never switch to the clean channel then the regular Decimator ii is enough. In that scenario one way to use the Decimator ii is to set your volume knob at your rhythm volume and set the decimator ii to get rid of the noise, then when you get to your lead crank the volume knob for the solo but this could bring a bit of noise (the pedal was set for taking out the noise from your rythm really). Another way to use it if you stay always in the lead channel is to crank your guitar volume then set the decimator ii to gate the noise, if you never turn your volume down for lesser volume then you are good to go, just like this video here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efws0GinKE4

If you are one of those who switch from lead to clean channel then you should try the Decimator G-String ii, the guitar input tracks the clean guitar and uses that to gate whatever is plugged in the pedal's loop like your pedals or amp, so when switching from lead to clean the pedal will not gate your clean sound.

Edit: I think for people who start with one regular Decimator ii and want to increase the noise reduction capabilities can buy a second one and link them so you can have nose reduction at 2 stages of your signal link and gating noise more efficiently, not sure if that is equivalent to having a single GString ii, you should call ISP and aks, I have and they answered all my questions.

Edit 2: I have used the GString ii with my SSL-1 in the middle and it really tracks the signal very well and keeps it quiet when not playing, but [amplified single coil hum] + [amp's own noise] will always be there when playing again. So depending on the amount of noise most of the times it will be masked by the actual guitar sound. For classic rock overdrive it is a winner.

Re: a good noise gate for a strat

thanks
good comment !

i have 2 amps
hum with the 2 ones with gain

- hum with single coils
- hum with the Marshall blues breakers as a boost and some pedals too

decimator has the I II and G string I and II lol

Re: a good noise gate for a strat

thanks
i bought the new tc electronic model
i will see if it's good or not

for amp, pedals, pedals +fx loop

a lot things !

the g String II is so expensive !!!!

Re: a good noise gate for a strat

I've used several and nothing beats the ISP. I have the rack version and it is as transparent and easy to use as it gets. The G String II pedal would be my second choice. Nothing even comes close. Yes, it is expensive, but it is worth it. The Pro Rack G is the best piece of gear I've bought in recent memory. Playing a lot of high gain amps, and they are ALL noisy no matter what you do, it is essential for me.

Re: a good noise gate for a strat

The ISP is an industry standard pedal. That being said, I know a few high gain guys that have instantly jumped on the new TC Electronic Sentry noise gate because (apparently, I don't personally use one so I can only vouch for what they say) the multi-band feature of it allows more of your natural tone to come through while limiting only the frequencies of hum and background noise. It seems like a pretty damn cool idea, and like it might have more versatility than the smart-gate or ISP which just gate everything under a certain thresh-hold.

Re: a good noise gate for a strat

THE SENTRY MODEL has a lot of functions
and they said it's very good and with innovations :)))
and can be used with a fx loop (just to try it)

it has analog and digital parts
+tone prints
+true bypass
+software

i wanted to try the MXR / ISP II/ EHX silencer too but
i will have it in the end of the week

Re: a good noise gate for a strat

I HAVE THIS PEDAL AND I LIKE IT !
there are the presets
and the software which needs time to use it a lot

Re: a good noise gate for a strat

i tried it as an fx loop with pedals (disto+wah) : i need one more long cable

i tried it in front of the amp
and i tried it in my amp's fx loop but i only use the clean channel

Re: a good noise gate for a strat

Good to know, I think the big deal here is to understand how much of the amplified 60hz hum (thru your distortion pedal) can be heard when you strum a cord or play a single note, assuming you crank the gain :), that is when the noise gate pedal performance will really come to notice.

Re: a good noise gate for a strat

this pedal has a lot of functions
http://www.tcelectronic.com/sentry-noise-gate/
- gate
-toneprint: only a few presets (4)
-hss if you have a lot of hum
- good quality components (digital+analog, as i read )
-true bypass
- fx loop in the pedal

- i tried it in front of the amp and 0 pedals
- in my amp's fx loop : I used it like that and like any pedals in fx loop =

PEDAL INPUT >send of the amp
PEDALT OUTPOUT > return of the amp
BUT THE WEBSITE SAID A VERY VERY COMPLICATED EXPLANATION ABOUT THIS SET UP, chain and i REALLY Don't know !! what they want to say

you can find it with GOOgle
sentry fx loop amp

-but i don't use this pedal in my fx loop amp because i don't need because most of hum are with distorsion pedal or wah +boost

- so now, i prefer using this pedal before or after lol my disto pedals

wah>comp>sentry noise gate>boost> disto> ^phaser chorus flanger vibe reverb delay bbe sonic stomp> amp :)

SO I NEED A LONGER CABLE FOR THIS

now i use it without this long cable so NOT WITH THE FX LOOP pedal

about the sound /hum with pedals, yes it's good
when ISP has one knob there are 6 here :))))

i had good results but they said it would be better with pedals in the loop (of the pedal)

i won't use anymore in my fx loop amp ; it is very complicated and i don't understand why it won 't be like every fx loop setting (delay, chorus ...)

can you explain this ?
sentry tc electronic fx loop with google
look at his answer

Re: a good noise gate for a strat

If not using the pedal loop then it gates noise based on the input signal only. If you use the pedal loop it also gates anything in that loop based on the input signal. If you don't ever turn your distortion pedal and always stay in the camps clean channel then you can keep wah>comp>sentry noise gate>boost> disto> ^phaser chorus flanger vibe reverb delay bbe sonic stomp> amp

y.jpg

If you turn your distortion pedal off for cleans and still maintain in the amps clean channel then you can use this

wah>comp>sentry noise gate Input> sentry noise gate send> boost> disto> sentry noise gate return>sentry noise gate out>^phaser chorus flanger vibe reverb delay bbe sonic stomp> amp

The cool thing of this pedal and the GString is that if you use your amp distortion and it gets noisy then you can also put the amp's preamp section inside the pedal loop and it will be handled just as another noisy pedal.

Re: a good noise gate for a strat

1)i only use my clean channel +pedals

2) my amp has hum with his gain but
a noise can be good even if i don't use the dirty channel

3)i would like to try the pedals like every modulations-reverb-delay =

input >send of the amp
output > return of the amp

but they write very complicated thing that i don't understand in the link
