A Kramer Ripley for the 21st century

I would venture to guess that quite a few of you are familiar with the Kramer Ripley guitar. For those who aren't, it was a short-lived attempt at creating a guitar with a pickup where the signal from every string was picked up separately and could be panned in stereo separately.

It obviously was not the most practical idea, owing to the amount of pots needed, but what opportunities! There was a bass model too, which I suppose might have been even more useful.

However, I can see why the idea didn't catch on. Would it be possible to build something like it today, though? I suppose one would first have to get a pickup to pick up the signal from every string separately. Bartolini made the original pickup, but it doesn't seem like they are making anything like it today, at least not for the open market. Are anybody else? Could you find a base pickup for a project like this without going CS?

And perhaps the most interesting question: are there any other guitars who have been running with ideas like this? I think something like this something I might like to explore in more detail at some point, but the idea might have been carried much further since the 80s. (I am aware of guitar synths and the Roland GK pickups, of course, but those are something slightly different.)

Yeah, this idea didn't quite work, as you'd need 2 independent signal chains, which means twice the amount of gear. Even without stereo guitars- just using a full stereo effects setup is a pain live.

Re: A Kramer Ripley for the 21st century

Well, I do have a stereo rig, with two rack preamps going into a power amp, thence into a 4x12 wired in stereo. I might replace the last with two smaller cabinets at some points, but for now it gives enough of an effect. I normally set it up wet/dry, but with a guitar like this I can see so many other uses for it. It isn't tinkle free by any means, but I can see it as being more than a toy.

Better for studio applications for a specific goal.

Seems to remember the Eddie used it on some song. Can't remember which.

Re: A Kramer Ripley for the 21st century

I don't see why that would be the case, really. There are some difficulties involved, but not too many if the rig is built well. My amp rig was built with a stereo set-up in mind, and I can see some very interesting uses for this that would be of real use live, such as having distorted EAD and clean GBE tones together.

If I were to design such a guitar for studio use, it would probably have been more useful to have a separate output for every string, thus allowing for exact modification of every pitch in the guitar part. That would obviously be very difficult to use in a live context.

Gear like the Roland VG-99 allows for stereo panning of each string, which is a cool effect. I don't know how much it loses live (like if you sit on the left side of a stereo PA), but I certainly see the stereo thing as interesting. It is more than a toy, I think. I just question the benefits of it at a live venue or with an unfamiliar PA (like at a festival).
