A Les Paul by SQUIER (by Fender)?!?!?

Today while passing from a really old and dusty moms & pops store I saw a gold les paul guitar that read Squier by Fender on the headstock. It was a little thinner and wider than the typical les paul, a little more rounded too. It had Duncan Designed pus. Would anyone happen to know anything about those instruments? It cost a little more than the typical Epiphone but seemed real old, meaning if I were to concern myself with it it would probably mean spending a good deal of money to bring it up to snuff. So, what do you think guys? (BTW, my ISP is giving me trouble so I cannot know when I'll next have access. Right now I'm writing this from a friend...) Here are a couple of pics.

I've seen that guitar before in a music store catalog. IIRC, they're not old guitars, I think that's actually a relatively new Squier model.

It's the same as a DeArmond M-75 which is based on a 50's Guild Bluesbird...after FMIC discontinued the DeArmond line in the late 90's they built a small handfull of them and sold them under the Squire.

Well, old is a relative thing.
That specific guitar seemed more than a few years old and I doubt if it ever had a setup ever since it left the factory. I really don't think I could get to play it there and actually get a feel of whether it'd be good or not, at least not without someone more knowledgeable helping me out.

Would it be something worth having both from a quality standpoint as well as a collector's or would I be better going for a run-of-the-mill Epi?

It's a Squier which means its very possible it's a halfway decent guitar (it's a cheaper line of guitar, so expect there to be plenty of shortcuts), but the average run-of-the-mill Epi would probably be just as good. I doubt anybody'd really see this guitar as a "collectors" item of sorts. The original DeArmonds, while cool guitars for the money, are never going to ever be sought after.
