A les paul guy needs strat info

I have about 650 AUD cash i can spend on an axe, and if I sell my amp I would have approx 1000 AUD.

I am thinking of getting either a strat or a mesa boogie in the next 3 months...
(current gear is listed below).

I really dig strats but i want to keep my les paul.
I am content enough with my sounds amp-wise at the moment, but the boogie is my dream...
But it would be one of the mark series, no less (probably a mark IV).

I played a highway one strat in store a while ago- and it was really nice to play, I really liked it.
But I also want a guitar that has a tremelo system that stays in tune when I divebomb eddie van halen style...
You know what I mean?

Any help anyone?
Maybe i should make some small time investments for the moment and work my moneypot upto a more sizeable amount and get something really nice??? please convince me to do this...

I just had my 16th birthday (its actually 2morro) and im looking at this cash, its looking back at me.... :smack:

Re: A les paul guy needs strat info

Not sure about the Mesa Boogie sorry, but there are Fender guitars equipped with locking tremolo

As far as I know,

  • American Strat Special (HSS - no?), Floyd Rose Original
  • American Deluxe Stratocaster, double locking tremolo

Not sure about how effective they are... but here are the URL's anyway

I'm not sure how expensive they are, I think they might be out of the $1700 AUD range... but possibly not - there are Mexican Fenders with Licensed Floyd Rose, don't go for that though :P

Hey cool, an all aussie thread sofar!

With $1000 AUD you should be able to pick up a nice second hand MIA Strat with a floyd out of a trading post or something. Either that or save up a little more and you shouldnt be far off.

I rekon you should get the strat rather than the boogie, especially since you are content with your amps.

Get a fat strat with a floyd, there are plenty around, and second hand there should be plenty of them around.

Re: A les paul guy needs strat info

If you want to dive bomb, a Strat tremolo will go out of tune, but there's a real trade off with a Floyd Rose in terms of clean tone, pain in the butt and classic feel. I'd get a regular Strat like the Highway 1 or the 50s or 60s Classic series (Made in Mexico) or even a used American series, and then see what you can and can't do with the Tremolo. If you're dead set on divebombing, there are Strats with Floyd Roses and humbuckers - including some relatively inexpensive ones that are Made in Mexico.

Re: A les paul guy needs strat info

Yeah, I really need to dig into a strat with a normal bridge and see how it goes.
The number one reason I want a strat is the feel, and the things it makes me do.... (dig in).

But that "Fender Strat Special HSS" would be really great, especially in Alpine White.
Mmmmm, Fender Fatstrat special in Alpine white.... *Drool*

Any more information?
Can someone elaborate a bit more on the overall differences in sound/playability of a normal strat and a floyd strat?

Fender Strat Special HSS, the new one though. it locks but its not floyd rose so u still get the classic sound

What about this puppy?

Are the pickups on the special with floyd rose different or is it just the bridge and locking nut that are different?

So, this new one special type - Would I be able to play say...
Van halens Eruption or Vai's Bad Horsie without it going too much out of tune (more than an 1/16th of a step?)

Re: A les paul guy needs strat info

if ur going to play vai ur going to need a hotter humbucker, but as far as the floyd rose, it will stay in tune.

Re: A les paul guy needs strat info

I didnt mean if the floyd rose one would stay in tune, I meant if the non-floyd rose one...

Re: A les paul guy needs strat info

I doubt a non floyd strat will stay in tune for halen/vai divebomb stuff, it'll probably go out like crazy.

Re: A les paul guy needs strat info

I would get on ebay and look for an 80's MIJ Fender Squire Strat...the made in Japan 57 Reissue with vintage vibrato. NO LOCKING VIBRATOS! You can find them for under $300 and they are excellant guitars with excellant hardware but lousy pickups. Then replace the pickups with some great Duncans: SSL-1, Antiquitys, APS-1/Twangbanger....something like that. My favorite Strat is my white MIJ Squire...I play it more than my '63. The other alternative (for me) would be a used MIM Fender Jimmie Vaughn...I love those guitars! Lew

Not even. With the guitar set up properly, a standard tremelo will not cause the guitar to go out of tune. I have a Fender MIJ Strat that I divebomb all the time and rarely have to tune. Adding an extra trem-spring (I use 4 in that axe) helps keep things stay where it's supposed to.
