i think the palladium comes close but maybe its just me, I dont want the hassle of changing pickups and am thinking a pedal might suffice to get as close as one can without changing the pickups. someone let me know what you think. p.s. it will be going on a strat

no

But let's play;

Which song? Please list by tune - each is going to be a slightly different pedal. And what exact guitar are we working with; Guitar, amp, pickups please.

Re: a pedal that sounds like pearly gates

For the record, Billy Gibbons uses a huge, MIDI Controlled, rack multi EQ, with the express purpose of having each of his live guitars sound like Pearly Gates... ;)

You want a pedal that makes a 'strat' sound like one particular famous les Paul? If you don't want the hassle of installing pickups, then you'll have to adopt a very loose and forgiving definition of 'suffice' for pearly gates. Like, "it sounds exactly like pearly gates if it were a 3 single coil pickup strat."

Re: a pedal that sounds like pearly gates

They are gently trying to tell you that a Strat is not the best guitar to use to try to get that sound.
However, an EQ pedal will get you much closer than perhaps most players realize. I would guess cut the highs, boost the lows & low mids, and start from there. Probably middle pickup.

It will never be the same exact sound but you can get into the same ballpark and possibly capture what you like about the ZZ Top sound.

You're welcome.
I should add some details: I assume you're using amp distortion. If not, try the EQ pedal before your distortion pedal and after to see which works better. It just depends on your equipment. Also, depending on how much gain your amp (or pedal) has and how high the output is on your guitar's pickup, if you get an EQ pedal with an overall volume control like a DOD FX40B or a Behringer EQ700 you might have to raise or lower the overall volume to find the right level of gain into the amp or pedal.

Really, though, just start tweaking those little knobs on the pedal and see what you get. Like I said, I'm guessing a wave (highish low end, high low mids, level high mids, low highs), but it totally depends on your amp, pickups, and anything else you're using.

Good luck!

A good EQ pedal could radically change the sound of a pickup. So it isn't as far-fetched as it sounds...I just think the question put it in a weird way.
