A pedalboard full of gain options. Anyone done it?

Re: A pedalboard full of gain options. Anyone done it?

i think it's a great idea. I've got a dedicated D/OD stompbox for each of my two main guitars, that's matched to their particular tones. Then one more for higher gain tones that's just for one of the guitars. Then two different boosts: one for abig fat boost, another with the EQ tweaked for treble & gain boost.

With combo, I can handle any tunes that come my way.

My amp is set for a very reactive, slightly dirty tone.

I've got...

SD SFX-03
Fulltone FD II 10th Anniv. MOSFET
Mesa Boogie Bottle Rocket
Carl Martin Plexitone
Pharoah Amps Sweet Cheetah II
HBE UFO...it's a fuzz, but also boosts

They're not all attached to a board, but I sure do get a kick out of each of them :D

Re: A pedalboard full of gain options. Anyone done it?

In some of my rigs I run mutiple gain stages in the pedal board and the amp clean. A booster or screamer as a boost into a another one, into a distortion pedal like the Tonebone or Silver Dragon are not uncommon. A TS into a disotortion pedal seems to help smooth things out. I like the OD-3 or the SD-1 for this use. As the boost seems to be more of an eq and push so the expensive pedals do not seem to add anything to the "tone" so I can't really hear a difference when using them this way.

If I am using them as the channel switching I will often use an SD-1/OD-3 into a Gov'2/Silver Dragon/Tonebone and then use a Jackhammer for lead. Usually I leave the TS on for the other 2. I keep thinking a nice tube preamp based pedal like the new SD twin tube, H&K's thing, Twin-V, etc. may be a better solution. Though it may be that I need to just move to a rack set-up.

I've done it in the past, though never with 5 different options. The most I've gone is a Muff style fuzz, a Fuzzface style fuzz, and an TS or Rat style OD of some sort. It's kinda fun, but I find I get overwhelmed by the number of options and I begin to yearn for a simpler setup. I also find I'd rather f*ck with my guitar's volume knob than stomp on a whack of dirt boxes.

Then again, I'm still searching for the right OD for my application. I've tried a number of them, but usually grow tired of them and switch back to strait amp tone. I'm looking to mess with a Hot Cake, OCD, and Fulldrive over the next little bit.

I have found that. As nice as it is to have a whole army of Boss pedals at your feet or whatever, I generally go for the simpler option too.

The only time I really had more than 1 distortion pedal though was when I had both a Boss DS-1 and a Marshall Guvner 2. I preferred the Boss, as the Marshall had a rancid muddy sound to it. It did have it's place though.

Re: A pedalboard full of gain options. Anyone done it?

On my board I currently have a Fulltone Fulldrive II For the low gain grit/crunch, a G2D Custom OVerdrive for my mid gain Drive and boost (2nd channel), a Spina/Stratdeluxer modded TS9 Tubescreamer for the slightly higher gain stuff and a Fulltone Fat Boost for either clean boosting the amp or using as a volume boost for solos when using any of my other OD pedals.

My Orange AD30 is my main gigging amp so I set the amp slightly gritty, use combinations of pedals for different tones or just play softer if I want a clean tone. Some people think it's a bit OTT, but ti works great for me :)

Re: A pedalboard full of gain options. Anyone done it?

Im definitely up for more flavours to use at different times. At the moment ive got a tonebone hot british and a TS808 clone (a good one), and one i definitely want to add is a seymour duncan tweak fuzz and maybe the seymour classic twin tube one too...just for some options ;)

Usually, you see pedalboards that are an equal balance of OD/Distortions and modulation or delay FX. Supposing you don't always use FX, have you ever thought of using a pedalboard with a multitude of gain devices? I'm re-evaluating what I really want to have on my pedalboard, and I had a thought about having 5 or more OD's, distortions, and fuzz pedals, just to make things interesting. It also allows you to have a lot of different flavors of gain. Your thoughts?

It's amazing how many ODs, distortions, and fuzzes there are. What's even more surprising is how our thirst is never quenched. I just made a count yesterday, and was surprised at how many different ones I've ended up with, and I still keep getting and/or making more. The simple point I've found is different ones, no matter how subtle the difference, make me invent different riffs and licks. I think one could easily fill up a pedal board with ODs/distortions/fuzzes and be able to use them all. I'm not in a band at the time, but I don't think I'd use that type of set up in a band situation - too many things to step on and worry about. At home, I'm always switching from one OD to another, but I don't use a board, I just grab one and plug it in.

Re: A pedalboard full of gain options. Anyone done it?

I've done it... I had a couple of different Fuzz effects, DS1, OCD, FD2, SD1 etc all on the same board.

Waste of time. Some are too similar. You alienate your audience who might have been eating up some of your goregeous tone. You confuse yourself by changing the feel every time you hit your board.

Now if you have a 2 guitar band or keyboards, sure have some fun, maybe use a really dynamic Fuzz (may I recommend the Fuzz Foot), but try and stick with one great tone.

I know a huge draw here in LA that uses a Budda and an FD2, maybe some effects around it for rhythm tones - and I love his sound. He lets backing tracks do all the keybaord type parts, and the HOTTEST women just dance all night because the music is happening, rather than a tonal dumping ground.

Joe, all you need is your OCD and your modulation FX and that Bogner of yours.

Re: A pedalboard full of gain options. Anyone done it?

I've got a Tubescreamer (which is always on) and my guitar got a Vol put.... i can even play clean by put it back .... ;)

but sounds like a good idea

I don't have a permanent board. I mix and match for the gig. It keeps the signal chain as clean as possible. I have had 4 gain pedals and a delay to modulation/delay pedals only. Its all about whats needed for the gig

You have a good point about simply deciding on one good definitive tone, so it makes you more consistent and identifiable. I'm probably letting my 'inner joneser' get carried away....although it's turned out to be a good thread. :fingersx: I think 3-4 is the max I'd put on a board for gigging with, and then just like other FX, I'd know which one to use for a particular part or solo.
I'm normally a player that doesn't like to tapdance too much and just play, but I've been really getting into different strat/tele tones lately, and I've noticed that OD pedals really alter their sound. Humbuckers aren't as drastic with OD's.

Re: A pedalboard full of gain options. Anyone done it?

Or you get a jagoff like me that has a few different amps....different amps take to different pedals differently (say that fast 5 times  ) .......

Having a few different setups makes for a whole lotta fun.......

God, I need a band!!!!! :laugh2:

Move here. We're looking for a rhythm guitarist. :D

I could live in Texas....loved San Antonio :32:

Think the wife would miss me or would she appreciate the empty space left by the missing amps

Bring her along. She can hang with my wife and sister-in-law. It's awesome here in the DFW area. I love it.

Re: A pedalboard full of gain options. Anyone done it?

We're actually thinking of/wanting to move.....DFW hasn't been mentioned as of yet, but I liked the parts of Texas I've been to.

If it was up to me, I'd be in a 3 guitar line-up with Christian & B Bent (the Atlanta area has been mentioned, as her corporate office is there).

Re: A pedalboard full of gain options. Anyone done it?

I have a dedicated clean boost pedal, a dual overdrive unit and a distortion pedal and I still look at other gain pedals. Nothing wrong at all ;)

Well, there's no hurricanes or alligators in these parts. ;) We get the occasional tornado that seems to pass by or wait until getting to OK before touching down.

Come on over and bring your OD pedals.

Re: A pedalboard full of gain options. Anyone done it?

It's funny you mentioned the gators....I live on a canal & was mowing the lawn earlier. I usually don't pay too much attention down there, but I had my eyes wide open today! :laugh2:
